"Spent on Rainy Days" as written by and Oberst/daniel....
I wish I saved it for rainy days
'Cause they're the hardest to stay dry
Got no self control
I'm always beggin' into telephones
And then I
I bought a little from my brother's friend
Yeah, well just to get me by
I don't trust his cut
The effect's never as high as the markup
I think I'll print it in the personals
That I'm looking for a match
Someone to light me up
Someone to burn the proof of the things that I've done
Each day there's hours
skip like a stone
I just crawl in a bag
I'm gonna live my life like somebody's shadow
I know I'm lazy with the little things
I mean I never held a door
But I still loved you more

Then anyone; Since or before
You're always saying that I owe you one
Well lets consolidate this debt
Get on a payment plan
I'll pay compliments, you can still treat me bad
But, now this isn't getting easier
to leave you and this town behind
I'll do some travelin'
Once I'm gone tell all our friend you've got even
I felt like an object, been set aside
You know, I'm back on the shelve
Not locked in the drawer
I'm mint in the box
But you'd still sell me for cost
Pull out a parachute
A blanket on top of you
The window you're looking through
Pull out a parachute
Pull out a parachute

General Commentthis song is about a guy and girl breaking up. He knew he wasnt the best boyfriend but he loved her like crazy. As soon as they broke up she just stopped caring for him, and was just a plain bitch. He wants to fix things, but the girls to stubborn. Now hes sick of her shit and is ready to leave her and all the other stuff in life hes dealing with.

i know exactly what he feels, i wish me and my girl did work out, and i regret breaking up. Im ready to move away. I dont really give a shit about her anymore, since she wont do the same in return.

General Commenti get a lot of different things from this song. yesterday i was listening to it and i realized it was a story about a hopeless boy in life.
it starts off by showing his desperate drug addiction, and how he tried to get clean, but he just can't take it without being high. in the first verse, it seemed to me that the match he was looking for is an actual match, like a flint, to light his joint ("something to light me up"). he's depressed and he just wants to forget about all the things he's done or hasn't done ("burn the proof of the things i've done"). he goes on to say that he basically gets high everyday so that he can just forget. he skips the hours because he can't remember them. the bag is like a bag of drugs, whatever it is he may be taking. and when you're always blazed, you're not really living. he's just living his "life like somebody's shadow."
and then it seems to me that he's reflecting.. because he has a broken heart to add to his broken soul. he's saying that he tried, but his best wasn't good enough, and that he can't measure up.
he's saying that this realization is helping him to leave everything behind. he knows he has some worth, but the girl can't see it, and just sees him as an object, something that she can use to her benefit (maybe to support her own drug addiction?).
and then he seems to be killing himself. he's leaving town for good. he's doing some travelling (to heaven or hell).
it seems like he's jumping off of her building, and he's free-falling by her window. and he's saying that she could have saved him, if she had wanted to. she could have shown him his own worth. but it's too late now. he's not the cord of a parachute.
that's just the way i saw it.
