This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,
[Back again]
Right where I started
And I can't find anything
To take me out of your
Shallow waters
That I've been drowning in so long [so long]
Who's here to take me out
Time to face another day
But will it be just like
The last one
It's up to me
To make the difference this time
I'll face another day
And it won't be just like the last [noo]
You talk loud without words
I've had enough manipulation
I found my way out
I'm not a slave to your game
[I found my way out]
[taking back what's mine]
I will take back
Right where I started
And I can't find anything
To take me out of your
Shallow waters
That I've been drowning in so long [so long]
Who's here to take me out
Time to face another day
But will it be just like
The last one
It's up to me
To make the difference this time
I'll face another day
And it won't be just like the last [noo]
You talk loud without words
I've had enough manipulation
I found my way out
I'm not a slave to your game
[I found my way out]
[taking back what's mine]
I will take back
