This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines:
"Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet"
So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other:
"I had all and then most of you"
Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart
"Some and now none of you"
Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship.
This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"
momma, daddy, brothers, sisters, I love you
this song is a valentine I'm sending through
my sweet angel baby rose, words can't say
without your sweet life, there'd be no me today
here's a box of chocolates
here's a dozen roses
here's a diamond necklace
here's a string of pearls
if I had a million
I'd get really reckless
buy a valentine for the whole wide world
to everyone I've ever known far and near
to everyone and everything that you hold dear
and here's to you, know who you are, please forgive me
for every time that I hurt you, I'm sorry
here's a box of chocolates
here's a dozen roses
here's a diamond necklace
here's a string of pearls
if I had a million
I'd get really reckless
buy a valentine for the whole wide world
here's a brand new harley
here's your wedding day
here's a cure for cancer
here's a better way
here's a new heart for the one that's broke
here's your forgiveness
here's a real good joke
here's your record contract made of solid gold
here's your dream come true
here's your superbowl
here's your home sweet home with the mortgage paid
look she's coming back, the one who got away
here's someone to have
here's someone to hold
here's someone to love if you're all alone
here's a box of chocolates
here's a dozen roses
here's a diamond necklace
here's a string of pearls
if I had a million
I'd get really reckless
buy a valentine for the whole wide world
