I can't write and I can't sing, I can't do anything
I can't read and I can't spell, I can't even get to hell
I can't love and I can't hate, I can't even hesitate
I can't dance and I can't walk, I can't even try to talk
Freddy tried to strangle me with my plastic popper beads
But I hit him back, with my pet rat
Yeah I hit him back, with my pet rat
I can't spit and I can't kick, I can't even be thick
I can't read and I can't spell, I can't even get to hell
I can't love and I can't hate, I can't even hesitate
I can't dance and I can't walk, I can't even try to talk
Freddy tried to strangle me with my plastic popper beads
But I hit him back, with my pet rat
Yeah I hit him back, with my pet rat
Yeah I hit him back, with my pet rat
Yeah I hit him back, with my pet rat

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."
"There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.
Punchline
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.
It always sounded like "Freddy" to me, qyola... I think "freedom" makes even less sense.
Good song but I have no idea how the whole "freddy tried to strangle me with my plastic popper beads but i hit him back with my pet rat" thing fits into the song. haha, but I like the way Poly rolls her R's when she says rat.
It's "freedom tried to strangle me" not "freddy" but I have no idea what that's about. Great song though.
Maybe it's about restriction, you can't do anything without being told off and you're lucky enough to be allowed to breathe! Pretty much like today really lol but that's another thing about Poly's lyrics, a lot of them still have a strong meaning/message in today's society. Seriously underrated I think.
Not entirely sure what the "popper beads" and "pet rat" lines are about though...
I always thought that it was just like "I'm not good at anything", (like 'I can't write and sing, I can't do anything...I can't read and I can't spell', etc) but the not being allowed part also makes sense.
"Freedom tried to strangle me with my plastic popper beads" - that could be about sexism. Necklaces (or any jewelry really) are usually more associated with femininity than masculinity, so, it actually makes sense to me. I think this is song is saying that girls are restricted by gender roles. The line, "I hit him back with my pet rat" could simply mean that Poly doesn't care and that she will do what she wants.
And I also love the way she rolls her R's.
It is a song about how women are constantly oppressed and abused, to the point where they aren't allowed to do anything and no one, including themselves, sometimes, believes they can support themselves. Or, at least that's what I think when I hear this song, and it fits with the whole "Freddy tried to strangle me.." thing. Took me forever to figure this out, so tell me what you think!
Pretty tried to strangle p'raps?
OllyB, that could be it! And that fits with the theme of lots of her songs.
@VerbalVeNom yea. i take the chorus pretty literally. "i cant write... i cant love... cant even get into hell," these are all the justifications this dude uses to abuse her. racism factors too. too many men + boys still dont regard black + brown girls as people on their same levels. they talk down to us in this exact way that poly writes, that is still very prevalent what, 40 years later? not just boyfriends but also our teachers, mentors, fathers, etc. saying we cant do this, we cant do that, they know better. and so many of us grow up internalizing it, hence "i". cuz when we ARE good at these things, these men act out their frustrations by abusing us. all bc they feel belittled by our talents.... lots of personal experience
@VerbalVeNom Sounds about as good of a meaning we can extract from this song. Makes sense to me
