"Turpentine Chaser" as written by and Christopher Andrew Carrabba....
This paint has been tasting of lead
And their chips will fall as they may
But it's not just my finish that's peeling
And it's not alone fleeing these walls

Well sooner or later this cold
It's gonna break so our hands will be warm again
But all I want is not to need you now
Yeah sooner or later this code
It's gonna break and our words will be heard again
But all I want are vows of silence now

This turpentine chaser's got kick
And the rag that it's soaked in is rich
And the fumes aide the pace of my cleaning
And as soon as I'm done I am gone

But sooner or later this cold
It's gonna break so our hands will be warm again
But all I want is not to need you now
Yeah sooner or later this code
It's gonna break and our words will be heard again
But all I want are vows of silence now

The frightening facts
We've been facing our backs to for so long now
Are begging for eyes
To bear witness to lies and indifference

Now we're saying aloud
The things we've declared in our silence
That new coats of paint
Will not reacquaint broken hearts to broken homes

General CommentMy girlfriend got to talk with Chris Carabba after he played at a Beck concert in NC about 2 years ago. She said it was awesome because she was one of the only people at the concert that actually went to see Dashboard and she got to hang out with him for about an hour or so while Beck played.

She said that he told her that "Terpentine Chaser" is a recount from a bad time in and old relationship. Pretty much all of the songs on The Swiss Army Romance are about one girlfriend Chris had.

He told her that they were in a big fight outside of his house one day and she somehow knocked a paint can on his car or threw paint on it (sorry, I'm trying to recount this second hand).

Anyways, paint gets on the car, so he gets a rag and some terpentine to clean it off...all the while his girlfriend is still yelling at him. The next part gives me goosebumps - He said that the whole time he was practically crying as she is yelling at him.
That, plus the fumes from the rag were so strong that he said the only thing on his mind was finishing cleaning up his car so he could make her leave.

Picture this: she's verbally assaulting him, not caring that she just got paint all over his car, he's crying, not saying a word, just thinking in his head "I'm so done with this, oh God, get me out of this"

Well, *I* thought it was really cool. I remember it because when me and Paloma met, she was wearing a Cat's Cradle shirt, and I was like, "hey, I saw Dashboard play there back in 2001!" That started the whole convo. Man, I'm so ADD. Love the Song. Now it means so much more to me. Hope this clears anything up for anyone.

General Commentim thinkin its about a guy and his memories with some girl or something and hes trying to rebuild his life, hence "the new coats of paint, will not reacquaint broken hearts to broken homes".

General Commentthis song along with "Again I Go Unnoticed" are the 1st 2 songs I heard by Chris, and I immediately fell in love with his music. I think this song probably has the most unclear meaning of all of them so I will try to break it down..."This paint has been tasting of lead and their chips will fall as they may, but it is not just my finish that is peeling, and it is not alone fleeing these walls."...something that was good is now going bad, and because of that everything else in his life is going bad too..."Well sooner or later this cold its going to break, so our hands will be warm again, but all I want is not to need you now.
And sooner or later this code its gonna break and our words will be heard again, but all I want are vows of silence now."..Eventually he will get through this, but right now he needs to figure out why it is happening and just be on his own...."This turpentine chaser's got kick and the rag that its soaked in is rich." well since turpentine is paint remover, its like he is trying to get rid of all the things that once caused him pleasure but are now causing him pain, but it is really hard..."The fumes aide the pace of my cleaning and as soon as I'm done I am gone.Well sooner or later this cold its going to break, so our hands will be warm again, but all I want is not to need you now."...he works fast because his problems are so big he can't let them sit, but once it is taken care of he is turning his back on everything even though he knows that one day it will probably be fixed."The frightening facts we've been facing our backs to for so long now are begging for eyes to bear witness to lies and indifference.
Now we're saying aloud the things we've declared in our silence.
That new coats of paint will not reacquaint broken hearts to broken homes."...The problems he has tried to ignore for so long are finally coming out and there is nothing he can do about it. Finally he is acting on what he has always been thinking, and even if he resolves his problems, nothing will ever be the same...so this song is really about facing your fears regardless of the consequences

General Commentpersonally, i think that this song is about suicide... not totally, but some of the lines make me think of that...
"this paint has been tasting of lead"
"this turpentine chaser's got kick, and the rag that it's soaked in is rich" - a method of attempting suicide is breathing in the fumes of cleaners like turpentine...
"the fumes aid the pace of my cleaning and as soon as i'm done i am gone" it's like he thinks the only way to help the situation is to kill himself and as soon as he's done "cleaning" he'll be gone for good...
"well sooner or later this cold it's gonna break so our hands will be warm again, but all i want is not to need you now. and sooner or later this code, it's gonna break and our words will be heard again, but all i want are vows of silence now." - this one was the only lyric i couldn't fit into my idea... but now when i think about it, he's basically saying that eventually things will get better, but he can't take the waiting any more, so he's saying that he wants the opposite (words being heard again, but he wants vows of silence).
you know... that was the first impression i got from this song... but now that i really think about it, it could definitely be talking about a relationship, and how he wants to cool it for a while, because he's really hurt from everything that has gone on, lies and indifference... and it's gone on for too long, and they're beginining to let eachother know what they feel... even if it hurts.. so he needs to get away for a while... he ends the song telling her that it needs to be over, because you can't just paint over it.. it's too wrecked... (new coats of paint will not reacquaint broken hearts to broken homes) wow... i guess that's what this website is for... i'll never think of that song the same way again... :o)
