"Paid In Full" as written by Eric Barrier and William Griffin....
[Eric B]: Yo Rakim what's up?

[Rakim]: Yo I'm doing the knowledge E. I'm trying to get paid in full

[E]: Well check this out since Nobry Walters is our agency right?

[R]: True

[E]: Kara Lewis is our agent

[R]: Word up

[E]: Zakia/4th & Broadway is our record company

[R]: Indeed

[E]: Okay so who we rollin with?

[R]: We rollin with Rush

[E]: Of Rushtown Management. Check this out since we talking over

This def beat that I put together, I want to hear some of them

Def rhymes, know what I'm sayin? And together, we can get

Paid in full...

Thinkin of a master plan

'cause ain't nuthin but sweat inside my hand

So I dig into my pocket, all my money is spent

So I dig deeper but still comin up with lint

So I start my mission- leave my residence

Thinkin how could I get some dead presidents

I need money, I used to be a stick-up kid

So I think of all the devious things I did

I used to roll up, this is a hold up, ain't nuthin funny

Stop smiling, be still, don't nuthin move but the money

But now I learned to earn 'cause I'm righteous

I feel great! so maybe I might just

Search for a 9 to 5, if I strive

Then maybe I'll stay alive

So I walk up the street whistlin this

Feelin out of place 'cause, man, do I miss

A pen and a paper, a stereo, a tape of

Me and Eric be , and a nice big plate of

Fish, which is my favorite dish

But without no money it's still a wish

'cause I don't like to dream about gettin paid

So I dig into the books of the rhymes that I made

To now test to see if I got pull

Hit the studio, 'cause I'm paid in full

General CommentHow is there not a comment on this song yet?

Well...he's broke. And he needs money. So he wants to go get a job. And he's hungry. And he decides to go hit the studio to bust his rhymes and make some cash.

All told by the genius that is Rakim.

General CommentThis song is about the trappings of life (money), and how with it, both with it or without it, can effect or influence your decsions.

You have Rakim clearly anaylzing his life. Reflecting on what he would do to get money. Then his revelation of rightousness, and learning value, joy, and pride of earning an honest dollar. Utilizing Hip Hop as a vehicle to touch others. Then, Rakim mentions fish. This has a very deep meaning. "That the creeping things of the waters," or fishes, signify memory-knowledges, is plain from Isaiah:- Also, Fishes in the Word signify memory-knowledges, which spring from things of sense. For memory-knowledges (scientifica) are of three kinds: intellectual, rational, and sensuous. All these are planted in the memory, or rather memories, and in the regenerate man are called forth thence by the Lord, through the internal man. These memory-knowledges which are from things of sense come to man's sensation or perception when he lives in the body, for he thinks from them. The rest, which are interior, do not come so much to perception until man puts off the body and enters the other life. That fishes or the creeping things which the waters produce, signify memory-knowledges, may be seen above (AC 40); and that a whale or sea monster signifies the generals of these knowledges.

My InterpretationThis song is all about being on the grind and just trying to survive in the concrete jungle.
Eric B. & Rakim are trying to balance their careers, finances and personal lives, we all can relate.

One thing that I love about these guys is that they're referred to as Eric B. & Rakim, both are credited. The arrogant rappers of today's mainstream never credit the people that produce their songs and make the beats they get famous off of.
