"White Queen (as It Began)" as written by and Brian Harold / May....
So sad her eyes
Smiling dark eyes
So sad her eyes
As it began

On such a breathless night as this
Upon my brow the lightest kiss
I walked alone
And all around the air did say
My lady soon will stir this way
In sorrow known
The White Queen walks and the night grows pale
Stars of lovingness in her hair

Needing - unheard
Pleading - one word
So sad my eyes
She cannot see

How did thee fare, what have thee seen
The mother of the willow green
I call her name
And 'neath her window have I stayed
I loved the footsteps that she made
And when she came
White Queen how my heart did ache
And dry my lips no word would make
So still I wait

My Goddess, hear my darkest fear
I speak too late
It's for evermore that I wait

Dear friend goodbye
No tears in my eyes
So sad it ends
As it began

General CommentThis song is either/both the beginning and/or end of March of the Black Queen - yes I realise it's track 3 on the album whereas Black Queen is track 9, but get what I'm saying here: this song is about the woman who is aloof, precious, magnificent, and the man can't have her. Black Queen, instead, is about getting this woman and finding she isn't all she appears - evil, manipulative, broody. Oh dear! You can flip it either ways and it works out - he gets her, loses her, then wants her back; or he wants her, gets her, then wants rid of the cow.

General Commentit doesn't matter who wrote it, Freddie and Brian might have shared their ideas on songwriting. I mean flick of the wrist, lily of the valley and tenement funster weren't wrote entirely by the same member but they still run into each other consecutively; showing that they intended their ideas to collaborate for such an effect.

General CommentBrian May himself quoted that White Queen could be both/either the beginning and/or the end of March of the Black Queen. It doesn't matter who wrote what.

General CommentNever thought about the two being connected...
White Queen always gives me an interesting feeling. I can picture it in my head. It actually reminds me a bit of Shakespeare when I hear it. Kind of odd, I know.

General Commentthis song is so damn awesome! one of my faves. the lyrics are part of the reason. quite tragic, the story in these lyrics. a man who sees a beautiful woman he can never get. this song stands the tests of time (well, i think so :) )

General CommentThis song is absolutely one of my all time favs. I think the song is about mary austin. She and freddie liked to hang out together, though rumour has it brian had a crush on her. And knowing Brian as a somewhat shy person it fits the lyrics perfectly
"White queen, how my heart did ache
And dry my lips, no word would make
    So still I wait"
And i agree with GabrielEva, this song is pure poetry.

General CommentSheer poetry indeed. Once i read the lyrics i listened to it again it is just so beautiful. And i think that the fact there's a song called Black Queen by Freddie and White Queen by Brian kind of proves there was a connection.

Whatever, In my opinion Queen II is better than NATO (please don't lynch me)

General CommentI agree with scimitar_255 on which is the better album... although ADatR is a very very close second.
