"She's In Parties" as written by Daniel Gaston Ash, Kevin Haskins, David Jay and Peter John Murphy....
Learning lines in the rain
Special effects by loonatik and drinks
The graveyard scene
The golden years

She's in parties
It's in the can

She's in parties
It's in the can

Freeze frame screen kiss
Hot heads under silent wigs
Fall guys tumble on the cutting room floor
Look-a-likes fall on the cutting room door

She's in parties
It's in the can

She's in parties
It's in the can

Learning lines in the rain
Special effects by loonatik and drinks
Freeze frame, screen kiss, hot heads, lights and power
It's patently obvious

She's in parties
It's in the can

She's in parties
It's in the can

Hot lines under a rain of drum
Cigarette props in action
Dialogue dub, now heres the rub
She's acting her reaction

She's in parties
It's in the can

General Comment"In the can" is slang for something being finished - like a scene in a movie that has been deemed successful by a director and therefore is "in the can"....complete. According to an interview w/Peter Murphy, the song is about Marliyn Monroe (who happened to mix pills and alcohol on a regular basis) - I believe this song could refer to her death as being her last performance, and that it is actually her life that is "in the can".

General CommentI always felt like it was about some dark underground gathering where things happen that are not supposed to be known in public. The 'parties' could refer to that, as do the 'special effects' that may refer to the events happening there. I could be totally wrong though. Brilliant song, and a great video. The whole look of the boys, the clothing, the haircuts, it's like one of those old horror films based on old gothic novels. The essence of gothic music was captured in this song and its video.

General Comment"She's 'in parties'" like other people say "she's in movies" in an idiomatic kind of way

she's staging her life, and possibly caught up in the cinema and the detached acting gig of it all.

General CommentI always thought it was "Lunatic Hendrix". Guess not. :-)

Everyone here is obsessing way too much over the meaning. I mean, this is the place to do so, but...really, folks, this song is just about a femme fatale movie actress who bit the dust. Yes, probably inspired by Marilyn, but NOT about her.

My InterpretationYes, it's the 80's folks, the party scene is in full swing, blow is the drug of choice, and the partygoers are masked like Cyrano de Bergerac. She's in Parties captures the nightlife underbelly, romancing not just the glamour trail, but the glamour in fail, the fabulas party hostess falls to the cutting room floor. The realism within the charade. She reherses, acting out reactions, ...fade out to the lovely Mandy Slade smooth long inhale from a cigarette prop (Velvet Goldmine (1998))... its in the can. = Its eaily done, rehersed, learned, behavioural, second nature. What needs to be remembered here, and explicitly develuged in film reference, that this party lifestyle is ALL about appearences, masks, striking a pose, vogue dahling. ...but its simply not as perfect as it seems. This song, and Brian Eno's 'Baby's on Fire' are both reminicent of the tragic actress of the classic film noir genre. The movie, 'Velvet Goldmine' gives u a last glimpse of this supporting female character as she devolves into the 'Sid & Nancy' or Courtney Love post-80's glamour personas. All that and a fuckin' great song too!!
