it was an isolated incident
back in 1984
on a plane headed south to west texas
i held my wings next to the frozen window

then a lady sat down right beside me
with big black glasses and long brown hair
she told me she was from west virginia
she bought me a soda and held my hand

and we turned on the radio
and we were laughing out loud
and that’s exactly who we are
it’s who we are
miss west virginia please tell me texas is not that far

miss virginia was a teacher of science
she said i looked nervous so i explained
it’s the shuttle i saw on the tv
she told me that shuttles and planes aren’t the same

General Commentprobally in my top 3 favorite mcs songs. good music, good melodies and lyrics. i think it's just about being nervous at first when meeting someone but how others can easily open up to you. that way, you'd quickly become friends.

General Commenti thik this is more about how total strangers can come together to support one another. In this case the lady helping him overcome his fear of flying, caused by the recent space shuttle disaster. The date of 1984 would have been when the singer was a teenager, maybe 17. I always imagined that perhaps he was going to college and flying alone for the first time, so maybe he was scared of the new responsibility he has due to adulthoood, and yet he can relate very well with this teacher which sits next to him, a symbol of his childhood.
