"Gardening At Night" as written by and Peter Buck Bill Berry....
I see your money on the floor I felt the pocket change
Though all the feelings that broke through that door
Just didn't seem to be too real
The yard is nothing but a fence the sun just hurts my eyes.
Somewhere it must be time for penitence. Gardening at night is never where
Gardening at night. Gardening at night. Gardening at night

The neighbors go to bed at ten
Call the prayer line for a change
The charge is changing every month
They said it couldn't be arranged

We ankled up the garbage sound, but they were busy in the rows
We fell up, not to see the sun, gardening at night just didn't grow
I see your money on the floor, I felt the pocket change
Though all the feelings that broke through that door
Just didn't seem to be too real
Gardening at night. Gardening at night. Gardening at night

Your sister said that you're too young
They should know they've been there twice
The call was two and fifty one
They said it couldn't be arranged

I see your money on the floor, I felt the pocket change
Though all the feelings that broke through that door
Just didn't seem to be too real
We ankled up the garbage sound, but they were busy in the rows
We fell up not to see the sun, gardening at night just didn't grow
Gardening at night. Gardening at night. Gardening at night

General CommentGardening at Night is a reference to Death of a Salesman. Willie Loman loses his grip on reality and finally decides to commit suicide to give his sons the money he could never earn. He goes outside late at night to plant seeds to give a lasting growing impression on a cruel world.

General CommentI don't see how it's unusual. Everything is better at night. Even gardening.

General CommentApparently "Gardening At Night" was, according to Michael the first "proper" song REM wrote. Gardening at Night is a metaphor for working for something unattainable, doing a pointless chore. I read somewhere that Peter Buck once had a neighbour with this unusual habit!

General CommentSounds to me there was some hydroponic gardening of the cannabis sort going on--either outside--it grows anywhere you plant it. Why do you think they call it a "weed"? Or down in the cellar with the proper lighting, soil, and weed-feed. Somehow, it's sort of a moonlighting hobby for personal use and even to sell to others. Sign me: The Pharmageek, from Oregon, the 1st state in the US to allow marijuana for medical use.

General CommentI love early REM, the lyrics are so obscure and poetic and their meanings somewhat ambiguous. But driver08uk seems to have got it. I just love this song and the lyrics despite what intended meaning they had. It's very underrated I feel and one of my favorite REM songs.

General CommentI have seen, I think it was in Uncut magazine in an interview, that the band claim the name comes from stopping on the side of the road to piss. One of the guys kept saying, "I'm gardening at night." However, for me the name will always mean undercover pot growing. It's a slang term that we've used for quite a while.

General CommentMy favorite posting is norweejun's, awesome idea. One thought: "nightsoil" is human feces used as fertilizer.. Maybe gardening at night is rehearsing the band at night?
