"Monday" as written by and Jeffrey Scott Tweedy....
Charlie had a plenty good band but he couldn't understand why no
One would go
A world record players on a tour of Japan, Charlie fixing his van with the
Left arm tan
He said
Monday, I'm all high, get me out of FLA
In school, yeah, I fooled ya, now I know I made a mistake

Blister on a turnpike, let me by, I only wanna wonder why when I don't die
Ew, I shot ya, yeah, I know, I only wanna go where my wheels roll
Monday, I'm all high, get me out of FLA
I fooled ya, in school yeah, now I know I made a mistake
Everybody's wondering, "where he'd go?" He must be down in Pensacola
Hiding from the snow

The world record players on a tour of Japan, Charlie's fixing his van,
He's waiting for a postcard
And he said
Monday, I'm all high, get me out of TLA
Well, I cut class, in school yeah, now I know I made a mistake
I made a big mistake

Yeah, alright
(Man, I've been listen to Creedence Clearwater Rivival)

General CommentI think it's about a guy who has big dreams but little motivation to go out and work at it. He expects that people will just naturally gravitate toward his band, but doesn't put any effort into trying to have a tight band, write good songs, finish school so he'd be in a better position to be able to write good songs, etc. At first he's desperate to leave Florida and tour the US, but then you find out that he hasn't even left Tallahassee. He's sitting around waiting for success to fall in his lap. I'm guessing "World Record Player" is another, perhaps rival, band that is touring Japan, and Charlie is waiting for them to send him a postcard so he can live vicariously through them.

I love the line about the "left arm tan," since that's what you get when you drive with the window rolled down (in North America, anyway) on a sunny day.

General CommentFun song, I just want to know what "FLA" and "TLA" stand for? FLA was the old abbreviation for Florida, or maybe its Fuckin' Los Angeles? I don't know...help? Are they airport abbreviations maybe?

General CommentTLA i think is the airport code for Tellehasse, the capitol of Florida.

I think "Monday" is about being bitter about someone else's success. I'm guessing a "world record player" is a DJ and our narrator is angry that a DJ is now a sought after musician and he is going nowhere. His bragging about how great he would be in his youth is his "big mistake."

General CommentFLA is definitely Florida and TLA could definitely be Titanic Love Affair but I always assumed Tallahassee. I was actually born and raised in Pensacola. I've seen Wilco three times and they didn't play Monday at any of the shows. It's killing me. I have to know why Pensacola?

General Commentromanticizing the lifestyle of a young musician trying to make it, fueled by an increasingly worrisome trend towards drug use occupying a key space in that lifestyle

compare to come on baby let's go downtown...they're happy songs, they celebrate the bad choices...they are written by men just beginning to grapple with the effects of drugs on their lives
