"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
On an old blue vinyl chair
I finally came to realize
I have floated for so long
That I don't know who I am
But the soldiers of my heart
Have surely set me straight again
If they feel I've gone too far
They always pull me back
Oooh oooh
Because they love to pull me back
Yeah, but now I should control my inner thoughts and intentions
But now I should have found a meaning and a goal
But I love to like me float in and out of intentions
Even though I know they'd love to judge the way I act
Oooh oooh
Because they love to pull me back
Oooh oooh
Because they love to pull me back
Oooh oooh
Soon I'll change
Soon soon I'll change
Soon oooh
On an old blue vinyl chair
I'm facing ...
And the sounds of others float
And likely fill my ears
The soldiers of my heart surely set me straight again
'Cause I feel I've gone too far
And I want our people back
Oooh oooh
And I want our people back
Oooh oooh
And I want our people back
Oooh oooh
I finally came to realize
I have floated for so long
That I don't know who I am
But the soldiers of my heart
Have surely set me straight again
If they feel I've gone too far
They always pull me back
Oooh oooh
Because they love to pull me back
Yeah, but now I should control my inner thoughts and intentions
But now I should have found a meaning and a goal
But I love to like me float in and out of intentions
Even though I know they'd love to judge the way I act
Oooh oooh
Because they love to pull me back
Oooh oooh
Because they love to pull me back
Oooh oooh
Soon I'll change
Soon soon I'll change
Soon oooh
On an old blue vinyl chair
I'm facing ...
And the sounds of others float
And likely fill my ears
The soldiers of my heart surely set me straight again
'Cause I feel I've gone too far
And I want our people back
Oooh oooh
And I want our people back
Oooh oooh
And I want our people back
Oooh oooh
