"I'll Be Alright Without You" as written by Neal Joseph Schon, Steve Perry and Jonathan Cain....
I've been thinking 'bout the times
You walked out on me
There were moments I'd believe, you were there
Do I miss you, or am I lying to my self again
I do these things
(It's all because of you)
I keep holding on, but I'll try
(Try not to think of you)
Love don't leave me lonely

I'll be alright without you
There'll be someone else I keep tellin' myself
I'll be alright without you
Oh love's an empty face, I can't replace
(You don't need it)
People wonderin' why we broke apart
The great pretender here I go again
These things I do
(It's all because of you)
I'll keep holdin' but I'll try
(Try not to think of you)
All I wanted was to hold you

I'll be alright without you
There'll be someone else, I keep tellin' myself
I'll be alright without you
Love's an empty face oh I've got to replace

I'll be alright without you
There'll be someone else, I keep tellin' myself
I'll be alright without you
Oh love's an empty place, I can still see your face
I'll be alright

General Commenthe knows that he is going to be ok even though they are broken up and separated.

one of Journey's softer songs, but a good one.
nice keyboard parts during the chorus

General CommentI think that he knows he's going to be alright without her, but he's having a hard time completely letting go. Like; he knows that he'll be better off without her, but he doesn't want to. He's reluctantly forcing himself to get over her because he knows it's over, but his feelings are still there.

For some reason that sounds terribly redundant, but you get the point.

General CommentI agree with jatuab. The line, "I keep tellin' myself" tells me that he's in denial and has to force himself to believe. I have some advice for that man. Don't stop believin'. I know that was retarded. Though any way you want it, that's the way you need it. If you don't believe me, ask the lonely. I'll stop now.

General CommentI've always pictured this song to be completely sarcastic in meaning. This guy just got out of a relationship with his one true love, and he's trying to keep himself composed...

"People wondering why we broke apart. The great pretender, here I go again."

He's really torn up inside and has to tell himself that he'll be ok when he really knows he won't.

General CommentOne of my fav from J. Steve Perry was the best. I was unaware of this but his style is actually a mock of Sam Cooke's. He was a fan of Cooke when he was young and practiced his style. Listen and you can catch it. IDK how true it is but a guitar teacher friend of mine told me that, just thought I'd share

General CommentI'm going to have to agree with the few who said he was being sarcastic. I think he's putting on a fake smile to make her think he can live on. I think he's saying that he's trying to move on but can't find anyone that he thinks can find someone to add up to her. It's like he wants to give up on her, but he doesn't know how to.
