"Fingertips" as written by John Linnell and John Flansburgh....
Everything is catching
Yes, everything is catching on fire
(Everything's catching on fire)
Everything is catching on fire (everything's catching on fire)

Fingertips
Fingertips
Fingertips

I hear the wind blow
I hear the wind blow
It seems to say, "Hello, Hello,
I'm the one who loves you so."

Hey now everybody now
Hey now everybody
Hey now everybody now

Who's that standing out my window?

I found a new friend
Underneath my pillow

Come on and wreck my car (come on)
Come on and wreck my car (come on)
Come on and wreck my car (come on)
Come on and wreck my car (come on)

Aren't you the guy who hit me in the eye?
Aren't you the guy who hit me in the eye?

Please pass the milk, please
Please pass the milk, please
Please pass the milk, please

Leave me alone, leave me alone

Who's knocking on the wall?

All alone all alone
All by myself

What's that blue thing doing here?
What's that blue thing doing here?

Something grabbed a hold of my hand
I didn't know what had my hand
But that's when all my troubles began

I don't understand you (I don't understand you)
I just don't understand you (I don't understand you)
I don't understand the things you say
I can't understand a single word
I don't understand you (I don't understand you)
I just don't understand you (I don't understand you)
I cannot understand you (I don't understand you)
I don't understand you (I don't understand you)

I heard a sound, I turned around
I turned around to find the thing
That made the sound

Mysterious whisper
Mysterious whisper
Mysterious whisper
Mysterious whisper

The day that love came to play

I'm having a heart attack
I'm having a heart attack
I'm having a heart attack
I'm having a heart attack

Fingertips
Fingertips

I walk along darkened corridors
And I walk along darkened corridors
I walk along darkened corridors
And I walk along darkened corridors

General CommentI think that this song is about the stages of life from beginning to end.

'Everything is catching on fire' - the chaos of birth
'Fingertips' - the doctor's figertips, as some others have said.
'I hear the wind blow' - learning about the earth

'I found a new friend underneath my pillow' - having trouble making friends
'Come on and wreck my car' - irresponsibility
'Aren't you the guy who hit me in the eye?' - dealing with bullies and being defenseless
'Please pass the milk, please' - being dependant on others
'Leave me alone, leave me alone' - teenager
'Who's knocking on the wall?' - living in an apartment
'All alone all alone' - single
'What's that blue thing doing here?' - ???
'I didn't know what had my hand/But that's when all my troubles began' - Being controlled in a bad job
'I don't understand you' - trouble in relationships
'I heard a sound' - getting worried about life
'Mysterious whisper' - a real relationship
'The day that love came to play' - self-explanatory...
    'I'm having a heart attack' - also self-explanatory
    'Fingertips' - mortician's fingertips

General CommentMy friend seemed to think that each 'song' was about a different musician, like 'I Don't Understand You' being Bob Dylan, etc.

General CommentThis song is about life and death. when you're born the first thing you're supposed to feel is the doctor's fingertips or something like that.

General CommentActually this was not meant to be a whole song. The listener was meant to put the cd player on random when listening to apollo 18. This way each of these snippets would wind up in random places between songes to give a flipping through the radio stations effect.

General CommentIt's about what everyone is doing and thinking at the moment of nuclear annihilation--or else about the life of a person, beginning with the doctor's fingertips on his head, and ending with the mortician's fingertips closing his eyes.

General CommentI think this is all nonsensical, but that's my opinion. I will grant you guys this: you metaphor is very persuasive. I can see this as being what he means. However, I don't see it that way. I think it is all nonsensical, and I like to sing little snippets to people when they apply.
Once there was a gob of sticky-tack on my desk, and I said, "Whats that blue thing doing here!?" in the singsong tone. Reactions varied.

    General CommentFast fact:

Sometimes when Linnell sings the 'heart attack' line live, he pretends as if he really is having a heart attack.

General CommentI've always kind of thought these were just ideas for songs that didn't make it. Don't know where I got that idea though.
