"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
a cup of wine unlevened bread
pased around to all his friends
a pale white abd a blood-like red
yet know one knew that this was the beginning of the end
they didnt understand "why the tears in his eyes?"
they didnt understand "why was jesus crying?"
they didnt understand he was gooing to die
they didnt understand in a grave he soon would lie
do this my freinds in rememberance of me
so that we may share a unity
the words rang out and now they knew
hanging on a cross his time was through
the meaning was clear it was sad but true
with jesus gone their was one thing left to do
the first communion the last they dine
a simple loaf of bread a glass of wine
in this tradition we bring to mind
our loving savior and how he died
pased around to all his friends
a pale white abd a blood-like red
yet know one knew that this was the beginning of the end
they didnt understand "why the tears in his eyes?"
they didnt understand "why was jesus crying?"
they didnt understand he was gooing to die
they didnt understand in a grave he soon would lie
do this my freinds in rememberance of me
so that we may share a unity
the words rang out and now they knew
hanging on a cross his time was through
the meaning was clear it was sad but true
with jesus gone their was one thing left to do
the first communion the last they dine
a simple loaf of bread a glass of wine
in this tradition we bring to mind
our loving savior and how he died

Ed Sheeran reflects on his good fortunes in landing someone with such peace and support and speaks of not fearing the dark days because he knows they’ll all end in the safety nets of her arms.
“Well, good morning there / What a way to start the day / With everything laid bare,” Ed Sheeran sings in the first verse, enthusiastic to be waking up beside his woman.
