This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines:
"Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet"
So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other:
"I had all and then most of you"
Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart
"Some and now none of you"
Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship.
This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"
It's insane - don't know why I came
Guess just to see you here
But from far away,
All I see is him and I just move on
This is crazy...
"No date for the prom?" you say
As we both finally meet
Then your smile fades,
And I see in your eyes that it's all no fun
Then you turn back to him
As the prom theme song comes on...
[Chorus]
I'm still in love, but I'm one of a million hearts
You'll someday break
Close my eyes, but still I won't give up,
Still I won't give up...no way
I'll wait, in this dancefloor haze
And suffer this silly suit just for one more gaze
And I'm sneakin' around like a fool - so dumb
On a Saturday night, man, is this what I've become?
[Chorus]
And I know that I still don't believe it's true
But I can't let you go and I don't know what to do
[Chorus]
Guess just to see you here
But from far away,
All I see is him and I just move on
This is crazy...
"No date for the prom?" you say
As we both finally meet
Then your smile fades,
And I see in your eyes that it's all no fun
Then you turn back to him
As the prom theme song comes on...
[Chorus]
I'm still in love, but I'm one of a million hearts
You'll someday break
Close my eyes, but still I won't give up,
Still I won't give up...no way
I'll wait, in this dancefloor haze
And suffer this silly suit just for one more gaze
And I'm sneakin' around like a fool - so dumb
On a Saturday night, man, is this what I've become?
[Chorus]
And I know that I still don't believe it's true
But I can't let you go and I don't know what to do
[Chorus]

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,
Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
This song is so amazing. Obviously we all should know what it's about. A guy who is in love with this girl. Basically unrequited love. He wishes he could be all she sees but instead she is with some other guy. And he's out for a date to the prom. It's a real good song.
this song isnt by the starting line... its actually by Ultimate Fakebook. Just thought I would make note of that in here. And the chorus isnt written correctly. Check out Ultimate Fakebook! They are great!
yes, they really are great. I'd noticed that people had been getting this wrong, too. Kinda odd because Kenny from TSL sounds nothing like the singer from UFB and the song doesn't really sound like a TSL song either.
that special girl haha i wanted to say the same thign but u got it covered well done haha
This is one of my favorite songs, i love this band. but in the chorus i think need revising i'm pretty sure it's...
i'm still in love but I'm one of the million hearts you'll some day break i'll close my eyes but still i won't give up still i won't give up
