So he dies and I'm the joke
A Play Doh mask a million miles to go
A suped up cock tease with a little twist
When sex got ugly I'd insist
Hear you'll empty all I've got
Fucking's over but I can't stop cumming
Still born dead or never born at all

When Jesus was my girl
She told me
When Jesus was my girl

It's impossible for me
Harder even if I turn it over
I'm not as pretty as I thought I'd be
Another symptom of my damn disease
Hear you've taken all I got
Fucking's over but I just keep cumming
Still born dead and never born at all

When Jesus was my girl
She told me
When Jesus was my girl
When Jesus was my girl
She told me
When Jesus was my girl

I'm not as pretty as I thought I'd be
Another symptom of my damn disease
I'm not as pretty as I thought I'd be
Another symptom of my damn disease
I'm not as pretty as I thought I'd be
Another symptom of my damn disease
I'm not as pretty as I thought I'd be
Another symptom of my damn disease

When Jesus was my girl
She told me
When Jesus was my girl
When Jesus was my girl
She told me
When Jesus was my girl

I'm not as pretty as I thought I'd be
Another symptom of my damn disease
I'm not as pretty as I thought I'd be
Another symphony of my damn disease
I'm not as pretty as I thought I'd be
Another symptom of my damn disease
I'm not as pretty as I thought I'd be
Another symptom of my damn disease
I'm not as pretty as I thought I'd be
Another symptom of my damn disease
I'm not as pretty as I thought I'd be
Another symptom of my damn disease

    General Comment

I can't believe I'm the first person to add a comment here! Anyway, I've already discussed this song a couple of times on the David Usher Messageboard, and here's what I thought the song was about.

“So he dies and I’m the joke” I think that’s referring to the death of the Lord Jesus (sorry to everyone who doesn’t believe in Jesus). Anyway, when Jesus died on the cross many years ago, many people believed that he deserved to die, and that he had sinned. But in all reality, he died free from sin. I think that David is trying to say that even though Jesus was put to death so many years ago, and had to die, he lived a life full of meaning, and purpose, and goodness...while everyone else who didn’t have to die are really the jokes because they live their lives in sin...

I think the next few lines are about how we have sinned – with our obsessions with sex…we are “supped up cock teases”.

I think that the obsession with sex is also brought out in the line “fuckings over but I can’t stop cumming” - I think that line's saying that even when people are not having sex, their minds are still on it all of the time...we are obsessed with sex.

Then there’s the line “not as pretty as I thought I’d be” I think that David is trying to say that his life isn’t as fulfilling and purposeful as he would have liked...it’s just about sex.

Anyway, I think the most important line in the song is “still born dead or never born at all”.

I think that being “born dead” is referring to the fact that we are born with no real purpose in life, and with no real aspirations. And then he questions - would you rather live a shallow life, or just never be born at all? He basically states that they are the same thing.

Therefore my final impression is that the song is about someone who realizes that the world is obsessed and centered around sex, and therefore realizes that it is impossible to live a fulfilled and meaningful life. So they contemplate whether a life lived in sin, and a life lived without purpose is a life worth living.

That is my opinion, but remember...to each his own...

    My Opinion

The song is very enjoyable: hypnotic, a touch exotic, subtly sexy--the lyrics cryptic.

I find it easier to process on a more literal level. It's a narrative of an older man, someone close to him died, who may or may not have been a male sex partner. This loss devastates him, he has lost all faith in the world; he is a million miles away from he wants to be.

He seeks out a woman and interacts with her in um, intimate ways. For she is very skilled in what she does. Perhaps she is simply a prostitute named Jesus? Or a sex therapist or even someone who is part of a sex cult...

In her he hopes to see a savior, someone who can bring release / religious rapture through ritualized sex. However, when the climax arrives, he realizes nothing has changed. His foolish, unpretty ways with the woman only serves as a painful reminder of his barren, empty existence. she urges him to turn to the real Jesus.

Standing On The Edge Of Summer

In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Cajun Girl
Little Feat
Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/
