"Fat Old Sun" as written by and Dave Gilmour....
When the fat old sun in the sky is falling
Summer evenin' birds are calling
Summer's thunder time of year
The sound of music in my ears
Distant bells, new mown grass
Smells so sweet
By the river holding hands
Roll me up and lay me down
And if you sit don't make a sound
Pick your feet up off the ground
And if you hear as the warm night falls
The silver sound from a time so strange
Sing to me, sing to me
When that fat old sun in the sky is falling
Summer evenin' birds are calling
Children's laughter in my ears
The last sunlight disappears
And if you sit don't make a sound
Pick your feet up off the ground
And if you hear as the warm night falls
The silver sound from a time so strange
Sing to me, sing to me
When that fat old sun in the sky is falling

General CommentNoone has taking a crack at this one either I take it. Number 4 on my list...

Only thing I could think of here was pills. I know someone like a mother could sit back with perscribed Zanax and sit in the back year while the "Fat Old Sun goes down and her kids are playing peacefully in the yard. Any other ideas?? Anyone?

General CommentAt the beginning of the song, you can hear bells ringing - the same bells used for "High Hopes" on "The Division Bell".
This is a great, mellow song with a very catchy (if somewhat derivative) guitar solo. My favorite song from Atom Heart Mother.

General CommentThe lyrics are actually summer sunday and a year and a time so strange should be a tongue so strange

And if this is about any drug Aminals, I think it should be Marijuana. The lines roll me up and lay me down, and lift your feet up off the ground ( a feeling of floating), plus the relaxed tone of the song, make me think that if it's referring to any drug its got to be that.

General CommentThey played this song at Storm Thorgerson's funeral not too long ago...so maybe it has something to do with death or mourning

General Commentanyone know of or ever wonder what the origin of "summer sunday and a year" is? jim morrison also used it:

I see you live on Love Street
There's this store where the creatures meet
I wonder what they do in there
    Summer Sunday and a year

    coincidence?

General CommentIt is also "a silver sound from a tongue so strange".

I usually don't say this about PF songs, but the only thing I can guess about the meaning is weed... "New mow grass smells so sweet", "roll me up an lay me down", "pick your feet up off the ground"... Now it could just be describing a lazy summer day, but theres my guess.

General CommentIf you ever get the chance, listen to a live version of this song from '70 or '71. When they played it live, it had a long, echoes-like jam. Very spacy and very cool. The studio version doesn't even hint at this.
