In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
Weight on your shoulders is heavy,
You've been suppressing these urges far to long.
You're sick of acting the right way:
It's wrong for you but it's right for them.
These urges inside you grow and grow till one day it happens,
You explode, pretending that you belong,
Why the fuck do you have that mask on?
Same thing all over again, this time in a different way.
Your life's controlled by other's rules,
Forget it man, be yourself, bent's ok. no way.
Fuck straight-edge, get bent

How come there arent any comments for this song?!!? the lyrics are good!!!
i have been listening to propagandhi for a long time. i have looked up to their intense truth and justice through the lyrics. it's almost as if their wisdom is beyond this world. they see through so many fucked up things i never thought to even question.
they got me into politics, and really changed my life. their lyrics got me into observing myself and purity as a human being. the only subject me don't meet eye to eye on is straightedge. and while i understand their very great points, and i strive to take them in and learn from them, but i think that their ideals on straightedge is strewed by what they know of it or it's based on the mass of the kids (which belive me suck, espically the christian influences on it within the last 7 years).
i understand living for yourself and not being a slave to conformity, and i understand that a label and a code of rules goes against that, but if you look at the root of straightedge and take it not for its rules but its points on purity than not only do the pointless rules vanish but it becomes truly for yourself and your own personal thing.
my ideals on straightedge are that, unlike the most comon belief, it's not for life. it's for how ever long you deem necessary. it= a strive to abstain from actions or substances that you would perfer not to. it all depends on what you want to strive for (not from). medicine, tobacco, crack, sex, jerkin off, soda, cars, jesus, et fuckin cetera.
i'm just saying edge, even though not used this way by many, can be used to help and not follow some tight code of rules.
Yah, so true man... I dont know why they are so against something so good.
Straightedge isnt a set of rules, its a way of life and by chosing that way of life, you arent conforming. Your conforming by doing what is expected of you which is to drink and abuse yourself.
I think the reason why propagandhi is so against straight edge is because they are drinkers and are afraid to stop. Their views on straightedge are warped. By saying "its ok to be bent" they are saying "its ok to drown your troubles away and forget whats real, and its ok to abuse yourself and poison youself"
nothing against propagandhi tho, cuz they are a great band and like alex said this is the only issue where we dont see eye to eye.
straight edge started as a meaningful beleif system, a way of life. but from what i've seen among kids my age (i'm sixteen) a lot of people just want the label, they act like it's their drug and would never make this choice if it wasn't for their friends'. their intolerance amazes me.
-sorry i'm prejudiced against them, not because of my actions, but because of my experiences. what i'm saying isn't a blanket statement, more of a jab at certain children.
i think if propagandhi wanted to stop drinking they could easily... they're vegans for a start. that takes a huge jump from accepting the killing and raping of animals is wrong to actually stopping consuming all their produce.
this isn't, however, the place to question propagandhi as people, what this song is attacking is the whole conformist attitude that manifests in the huge majority of "edge" kids.
i don't think propagandhi are advocating drowning your sorrows in drink either, just saying that it's no reason not to drink just to fit in with some dress-coded scripted means of existence.
i dont think this this song is attacking straight-edge, i think its attacking narrow-minded straight (as in heterosexual) people who believe that everyone needs to conform to their sexuality. by the way, "bent" is a word that used to be used as a derogatory slur against queer folk, but propagandhi is reclaiming it in a resistant way much like other non-heterosexual people have started using the word "queer" in a positive way.
sexuality is what i immedietly thought of when i heard the lyrics about urges being suppressed for so long. for some people, only having sex with someone of the opposite gender might be "right for them", but turning their preferance into "the rule" iis "wrong" for everyone else.

Wow, I never looked at it like adamndirtyshame but now you say it, it does sound like an attack. Not against twatish homophobes exactly just people who are scared to 'come out' which is just another form of homophobia really, but yeah so basically its saying if you like men, then be gay theres nothing wrong with it. Which is something everyone should agree with really.
I think this is one of their dumbest songs, musically and lyrically. It seems like they think so too. Not sure about the homophobia reading, but that is interesting.
How do you take into account the direct jabs against "straight-edge" at the end? I guess I just find a sexuality based reading of the song a bit of a stretch.
