I tend the wheat field that makes your bread
I bind the sweet veal, pluck the hens that make your bed
Mother Nature & Mother Earth
Are two of three women who dictate what I'm worth

[Chorus]
I'm the farmer.
I work in the fields all day
Don't mean to alarm her
But I know it was meant to be this way

You cried a tear, I wiped it dry
I put you up upon a pedestal so high
If you should waiver, if you should sway
I'd catch you, spread my tiny wings and fly away
You signed your picture with an O and X
I bet you don't write "love" each time you sign your cheques

[Chorus]

All of this corn I grow I grow it all for you
I took a hatchet to the radio I did it all for you
You could have written back,
You could have said "thank you"
I guess you've got better things,
Better things to do

You say you love me, is that the truth?
Although they've heard the songs, my friends want living proof
I know your address, I ring the bell
I bring you flowers and a .22 with shells

I'm the farmer
I work in the fields all day
Never wanted to harm her
But I know it was meant to be this way

General Comment:That makes sense. I do tend to think this song is about a crazy fan who becomes obsessed and finally murders the celebrity singer he is stalking. hmm.

General Comment:Ed once explained that this song is all about a farmer who had a crush on Anne Murray. It's basically about this guy who loves her music, listens to it all the time and thinks that she's singing directly to him.

General Comment:yeah it is based on a real event, i thought i was the only one who knew about it.

" bring you flowers and a twenty-two with shells"

a twenty two is a shotgun and shells are it's ammo

General Comment:I think this song is about a stalker, who believes he has an imaginary relationship with the celebrity. Eventually, he plans on killing her.

General Comment:Haha, only BNL could come out with a song like this :)

Alright, well other people oculd too, but they're the only ones who would make it worth listening to. Their music is fantastic, I love it

General Comment:A twenty-two is not a shotgun, but a rifle.

General Comment:yeah. he was referring to a .22 caliber rifle, and the shells, though usually used to refer to shotgun ammunition, can mean rifle shells. they don't even make 22-gauge shotguns.
