"Stomach Vs. Heart" as written by and Steven/robertson Page....
In through my veins, without brains,
I involuntarily take what I need, then I bleed
And it comes right back to me
But guts only eat
And sometimes they repeat on you
Keeping on your toes or crouched above the loo

That's what you get when you confuse your stomach
with your heart
That's what you get when you confuse your stomach
with your heart

Blood turns from blue into red
'Cause of oxygen that it's fed
And I turn back to blue,
'Cause I'm losing you
But Tummy just growls
Not real words, mostly vowels
And I always forget sometimes why
Gratification can cause constipation
If organs are left to die

I gained all this weight out of love, not hate
I've got all this love to give (give me a break)
I'd love to sleep in late, but that dessert looks
Was it something I said, or was it something I

Hearts beat in sync, beat in time
Beat in bodies like hers and mine
But I fed only one
And look what it's done
'Cause I've run out of blood and I'm chewing my
And my gastrointestinal festival's best of all
Cardiovascular questions they ask you are
Less than the answers they give you like cancer

General CommentOf course, it can be taken a couple of ways. But reading the lyrics JUST now, it clicked! Perhaps the song is about eating a lot, and taking food in place of love. Kinda like the stereotypical girl eating a pint of ice cream when she gets dumped, just not so tragic.

I love the way Barenaked Ladies fiddles words arounds almost magically.

"And I always forget sometimes Y"

They make you question going, "eh?! Opt! But...does that mean? Which way do you mean it?!" lol

General CommentBNL should get a prize just for slipping gastointestinal and cardiovascular into a song. I think it's hard to throw such words in.
THe song from what I see is about the old age problem of love, what with the going with the guts or the heart. It may also be about just eating a lot of the girl's cooking. BNL can be funny that way,

General CommentThis song is the ago old debate between sex and love. Eating is a metaphor for sex in this song. It's about what happens when you confuse sexual attraction for love.

General CommentHate to be a downer here, but I'm 80% sure that steve's talking about pooping. it's really easy to see it. re-read through the lyrics and tell me you don't see it. Steve likes talking about strange things and talking about pooping in a song is indeed strange.

General CommentBNL is so strange... and they write about funny things... or use funny metaphors for things rather. I don't know. You can interpret it many ways, which is lovely. Anyway, this song is fun. Picks me up a little.

General CommentI'm going to assume Zamrod is right. Makes the most sense.
