I was waiting for something
Maybe flying machines
That's when I found Lily
The best I've ever seen

Put her on the ceiling
Try to make her my own
People line up to see
But there never seems to be enough

Space, space
Space, space

I was waiting for something
Maybe flying machines
That's when I found Lily
The best I've ever seen

Put her on the ceiling
Try to make her my own
People line up to see
But there never seems to be enough

Space, space
Space, space
Space, space
Space, space, whoa

Space, space
Space, space
Space, space
Space, space, whoa, whoa

First, for those of you doing the obligatory "I don't care what it means, it just kicks ass," then you really probably shouldn't have bothered logging in at "songmeanings.com" to tell us that. If you don't care what it means... you're obviously in the wrong place. You took a lot of time and effort, and cared A LOT, to come all the way here and tell us you "don't care," lol.

Secondly... it really doesn't have any of the meanings you guys below think it does (sorry). It's not about his "wife" or about the name "Foo Fighters" or any of that...

Dave used to write lots of cool songs without deep hidden meanings. This one is about a kid who was into model airplanes. He wanted to wow all the kids on his block with his new amazing purchase, which was a HUGE model airplane. He's really upset, because there isn't ENOUGH SPACE on the ceiling to make it work.

    That's it. That's all.

"Lily" is what he named the airplane (or maybe the name it had on the box it came in). It was "the best (he'd) ever seen." He was waiting for "flying machines" (i.e. he was looking for some kind of airplane to put on his ceiling). "People line up to see," because he's a KID, and all the kids on the block are coming to see the new massive airplane he's got. But there never seems to be enough space. So that's why he screams "ENOUGH SPAAAAAAAAAACE!!!"

It's a great song because it's NOT about "That time Dave was going through a divorce, and blah blah blah." In fact... it's genius.

I agree with you guys - this song kicks ass! I think its about when you're with someone and everyone is too involved in your relationship, and all you want is a bit of privacy... Dave Grohl must get a lot of that - celebrities don't really get any time to themselves, especially if they're in relationships.

I don't give a shit about the meaning of this song. Al i know is that it's fucking sweet and has a sick Bass riff. Colour and the Shape was best Foo Fighters album IMHO.

I can very vaguely relate this to his marriage. Maybe he just feels that they aren't getting enough 'alone time.' He just wants to 'put her on his ceiling' so to speak, keep her to himself.

"That song's actually about a movie called Arizona Dreaming, which is one of my favourite films!" - Dave Grohl

Its a pretty solid fooz song, but it was writen simply because Dave Grohl had enough of being asked questions about space and E.T. etc in interviews. He was being asked these questions because his record label is called roswell, foo fighters are named after some extraterestrial things seen by the airforce and hes a huge space fan

    Song Meaning

Meaning aside... this song was created by Dave to get the crowd bouncing to start a show.

Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

Dreamwalker
Silent Planet
I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

Magical
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

Punchline
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.
