tasting you and rain I walk down to the train
trying not to look down
this day could some day be an anniversary
everything is light and sound
facing forwards going slowly
wait for you to show me
where this train wants to go
living by the hour I
stop for every flower
everything is soft and slow
now all these tastes improve
through the view that comes with you
like they handed me my life
for the first time it felt right

thank you for making me
see there's a life in me
it was dying to get out
holding you we make two spoons
beneath an April moon
everything is soft and sweet
this cigarette it could seduce
a nation with its smoke
crawling down my tired throat
scratches part of me that's purring
softly stirring
I'm a captain of industry smoking famously
feet up on the windowsill
looking at all these trees I feel affinity with
everything so soft and still
budding at my fingertips
touching you I start to bloom
alive with trains and passing ships
soft and sweet along your lips now
I go "oh wow"
thank you for taking me from my monastery
I was dying to get out
with tears of gratitude
I lock my latitude
cross town train to you
now all these tastes improve
through the view that comes with you
like they handed me my life for the first time it felt worth it
like I deserved it

General CommentThis is a very good song about love and the time in a person's life when they realize what that love has done for them. If you are feeling down listen to this song. If you are high on life because you have found that special someone, listen to this song. No matter what mood you are in, this song will do nothing short up bringing you up a few notches.

General CommentThis is quite possibly one of the most amazing love songs I've ever heard. This song mellows me out and makes me feel good just about any time. Jets is definately an incredible band.

General CommentThis is a love song....about marijuana. That's why he keeps bringing up smoking.

"Tasting you and rain I walk down to the train try not to look down"

He's smoking in the rain on the way to the train station (we'll find out why he's taking the train later). That's why he's tasting it.

"This day could one day be an anniversary everything is light and sound"

He's finding a reason/excuse to smoke. Some people with smoke a cigar on a significant anniversary, some will have a drink of whiskey....Blake is smoking a joint as a pre-emptive celebration for an event that may or may not happen.

"Facing forwards going slowly, wait for you to show me where this train wants to go"

His sitting on the train as it slowly moves forwards and is waiting for the weed to hit him and take over his mind. He's going to allow it to guide his 'train of thought'..to take him down a, perhaps sweet, avenue...

"Living by the hour I stop for every flower everything is soft and slow"

In his high he is taking things slowly ('living by the hour' suggests carefree, un-rushed) and seeing the beauty in everything around him. 'Stop[ping] for every flower' and admiring the beauty that is typically taken for granted because he is being overwhelmed by his high.

"Now all these tastes improve through the view that comes with you"

Whether literally speaking of food or figuratively of the sights he's seeing or feelings he's feeling...everything is better under the influence. Its the view that automatically comes with smoking a little refer.

"Like they handed me my life for the first time it felt right"

He's alive now...feeling everything more deeply, thinking about things more deeply.

"Thank you for making me see there's a life in me it was dying to get out"

He was living repressed and under the influence he allows himself to feel things and cope with things and actually experience life.

"Holding you we make two spoons beneath an April moon everything is soft and sweet"

He's romanticizing about being under the stars with a bowl and holding it, spooning with it, as he smokes under a night sky. Things are 'soft and sweet' again like before when they were 'soft and slow'.

"This cigarette it could seduce a nation with its smoke"

Just making reference to weed's cultural impact. How it draws people into it with the pleasures it gives to you.

"Crawling down my tired throat scratches part of me that's purring softly stirring"

Talking about taking a hit and letting the smoke crawl down his throat which is scratchy from smoking so much but softly (there's that work again) it is pleasuring him ('purring') and stirring his emotions.

"I'm a captain of industry smoking famously feet up on the windowsill"

Just talking about kicking back with a joint or a bowl..feet up...maybe he dealt a little bit making him a captain of the industry? Bottom line is, you can always find him relaxed and smoking, that's why he's smoking famously with his feet up.

"Looking at all these trees I feel affinity with everything so soft and still"

Trees. Something people call weed. He has a lot. He's admiring it. I actually think this is a double entendre and he is also talking about looking at actual trees. Again, he uses 'soft and still' so its also a call back to 'stop[ping] for every flower'. He feels a oneness with nature. And with his stash.

"Budding at my fingertips touching you I start to bloom"

More word play. Bud. Something else people call weed. But he's touching weed now and his fingers are budding with anticipation. He blooms as he touches it because he knows he'll be able to feel alive again soon.

"Alive with trains and passing ships soft and sweet along your lips now I go, 'Oh wow'"

Again...being alive with trains and ships is that oneness he just alluded to. 'Soft and sweet again'. The 'Oh wow' is what he says to himself after taking a hit. Its good shit and it hits him nicely.

"Thank you for taking me from my monastery I was dying to get out"

Another call back...this time to the fact that he was not really living even though desperately wanting to. Thanks weed!

"With tears of gratitudeI lock my latitude cross town train to you"

He's locked onto his coordinates. He knows where he needs to go to re-up and get more weed. He's taking the...train! He's back on the fucking train! How sweet? That's where he started the journey and now we know why!!

"Now all these tastes improve through the view that comes with you"

We did this one already, Blake. Its ok because he got more weed and smoked and things are improving again. The view that comes with smoking.

"Like they handed me my life for the first time it felt worth it like I deserved it"

He finally feels he deserves to be happy. He is free, happy, alive...all thanks to weed.

This interpretation doesn't make the song any less beautiful to me. The poetry is still second to none and he still held a great emotion for something that did to him what all your significant others did for you emotionally (emo!!!)

I actually think its more beautiful that Blake can see and understand love outside of a person to person relationship. He loved weed. And he knew it. And that's just as beautiful as anything.

If you ever went through a period where you smoked a lot just put yourself as the singer of this song and tell me its not perfect.

That's why I think its more beautiful than if this was strictly about a humanoid love interest. He wrote the absolute, most perfect love song about weed. I don't know anyone that's ever done that before. Not a song like this. Not this poetic. This poignant. This emotionally accurate. Its what makes Blake the best lyricist of his generation.

Smoke 'em if you got 'em!

General Commentthis song makes me very happy and very sad at the same time. on the one hand, I'm very glad that this sort of love does exist in the world. on the other hand, why doesn't it exist for me?

at any rate, it is a beautiful love song without any of that sugar-coated, flowery crap. it is about being READY for this kind of elation that comes along with honest love. it's just an incredible song, musically and lyrically.

i love the lines "tasting you and rain" "this cigarette, it could seduce a nation with its smoke" and "touching you i start to bloom" - it reminds me of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, for some reason
