morning new disease charcoal in bed / boansoaked anemic listen in horror / to the scraping of flatware and china / and saran wrap to stifle libido / air shaft a chasm their lives flung open / sickness is a time for hating your neighbors / in their milk flats with five kids too many / having day sex because they're all daughters / and you're thinking the same two things / over and over again / I am dreaming of a life and I am dreaming of waking up / there's this anger rising cancer in me standing like a wall between / the waking world I seek and this infected plane of sleep / love come like an axe to all this ice and set me free / there's a black rewarding book / beneath this stiff sheet if you look carefully / noise police white hearse tv air wave methadone / diet contact safe sex antibiotics / for your safety we've taken sharp objects / it's their object to keep you from waking / taste test serenade we dig the grave / lose weight astrologically no money down / for your enjoyment we've excised the dialogue / for your protection we've installed a camera / just keep thinking the same clean thoughts / and keep telling yourself it's allright / I am dreaming of a life / and it's not the life that's mine / in a stolen car I rocket west out past that Jersey line / and the robots in their riot gear glimmer in my rearview mirror / love came like an axe and had her way with this coarse earth / and a small deserving book she was recovered and understood / and I awoke

mechassassin1... i don't think it can be about 1984- although i can see the overall theme could be likened to it, the lyrics themselves make no reference nor allusion to anything. personally i think it's about people's lives being empty and them not being able to better themselves. the lines "in their milk flats with five kids too many" and "I am dreaming of a life / and it's not the life that's mine" make my point i think.. they make me sad too, lol. overall a fantastic song- one i don't think i'll ever tire of- and as proven, one that has a lot of meaning that everyone interprets differently. great tune, riffs too. what else do u want from a song? :P

Not enough people realize how truly wonderful this song is. my favorite would have to be "air shaft a chasm their lives flung open, sickness is a time for hating your neighbors."

'to the scraping of flatware and china and saran wrap to stifle libido' this is my favourite line in the song. To mean it says, I am so sick of being stuck in a committed relationship without any hot sex! It screams of wanting to get out of the situation.

the best line i've ever heard: "and the robots in their riot gear glimmer in my rearview mirror." just beautiful. to me this song is talking about the disease of depression and society making it difficult to accomplish your dreams.

I always think of how modern day society labels us and tells us how much shit is wrong with us, in the olden days people didn't have 50 different diseases and disorders and problems to worry about, they came in the package of life. I don't know, that doesn't make sense, but that's me.

does anyone wanna take a shot at what the black, rewarding book is? I guess the most obvious answer would be the bible, but that really doesnt seem to sit well with the rest of the song.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.

Page
Ed Sheeran
There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.

Midnight
Ed Sheeran
“Midnight” is a song about finding a love that is so true that it provides a calming feeling through every storm. Ed Sheeran reflects on his good fortunes in landing someone with such peace and support and speaks of not fearing the dark days because he knows they’ll all end in the safety nets of her arms. “Well, good morning there / What a way to start the day / With everything laid bare,” Ed Sheeran sings in the first verse, enthusiastic to be waking up beside his woman. He apologizes for missing her calls in the second verse and promises to return them because for him, speaking to her is the most important thing. “Well, I get lost inside my head / In this chaos, you’re my calm / And I will find my feet again / ‘Cause еven the worst days of my life will always еnd / At midnight in your arms,” sings Ed Sheeran in the chorus, revelling in his good luck.
