This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.

This song opened my inner eye. Once "it" happens to a person, the purpose of life becomes clear to you. Things in life happen for reasons. Search the internet for "inner eye" and read about it. There are more songs than you can imagine that discuss this most wonderful of gifts from God. The reason many people don't understand the words, is because you have not been able to open your inner eye as of yet. The analogy is; that it is like listening to somebody speak a forien language. You can't understand the language until you learn it. Once it happens, EVERYTHING becomes crystal clear. Honest
I like Reynolds's movies, too but Semi-Tough wasn't a very good one to steal cosmic philosophies from.
