“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.

Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
I don't really see the alien abduction thing, but I'll let you know what I think these lyrics mean.
I don't know if these lyrics communicate one story, but I think it definitely is a hopeful yet bitter message. Actually, it seems to me as if perhaps that the part after "Now he's back at home and happy/just to see the kids" is the man who, according to earlier in the song, fell victim to some creeps who wanted to rob him. Maybe his kids asked him what happened, and he's like "well, i wish i could tell you that everything's great and man, i wish the world was really nice and a sparkling utopia" but—oh wait, that's not really how things are. Shut up, face the truth—keep it dark. It's almost like the lyrics are despairing for the state of the world, wishing that things were wonderful, but in reality it's all quite dark.
Love this song, one of my favourite Genesis tunes.
@AdamantVision not wishing..he knows, REM's "Losing My Religion" is similar because I've seen so many interpretations but to hear Mike Stipe tell it (youtube.com/watch) it unrequited love...to me it was released as my eldest son faced his teen years and I watched him "lose his religion" of all the things he'd been raised to believe.
