"Heavy Things" as written by and Tom Marshall Scott Herman....
Things are falling down on me
Heavy things I could not see
When I finally came around
Something small would pin me down
When I tried to step aside
I moved to where they hoped I'd be

Vanessa calls me on the phone
Reminding me I'm not alone
I fuss and quake and cavitate
I try to speak and turn to stone

Telly reaches through my vest
To do the thing that she does best
She probes and tears my ventricles
Steals my one remaining breath

Things are falling down on me
Heavy things I could not see
When I finally came around
Something small would pin me down
When I tried to step aside
I moved to where they hoped I'd be

Stumbling as I fall from grace
She needs my vision to replace
Her ailing sight throughout the night
Leaving two holes in my face

Mary was a friend I'd say
'Till one summer day
She borrowed everything I owned
And then simply ran away

Things are falling down on me
Heavy things I could not see
When I finally came around
Something small would pin me down
When I tried to step inside
I moved to where they hoped I'd be

General CommentThis is the only Phish song I ever heard played on my local radio stations, on one particular station around here. I have no idea what the rest of their songs sound like.

I suppose the song is about not worrying about the heavy things in life and just enjoying well... this song seems to be about women and the good memories he has of them. When I tried to step inside, I moved to where they hoped I'd be... no idea. I don't think Phish fans like to interpret the lyrics, but I'm curious, would like a better idea what they're talking about.

General CommentI like it, has the same attributes as Sparkle, sad lyrics to an upbeat tempo, with some good lines:
"Stumbling as I fall from grace.
She needs my vision to replace.
    Prevailing sight throughout the night.
Leaving two holes in my face."

General Commentrelationship problems do suck and no band expresses that as well and as metaphorically as phish

General Commentreminds me of that maxwell edison song by the beatles where it's not such a nice topic, but the way they're talking about it is in a cheerful manner. it's about how bad stuff always happens and when it keeps happening you feel like it's aimed at you. for him it's problems with girls (vanessa, tilly, mary), nothing in his love life seems to be going right and he's starting to think there's something wrong with him

General CommentI really like this song, and agree with the "Sparkle" comparison. It's a nice changeup to Phish's normal sound, while still feeling like Phish.

My InterpretationSeems like battling with depression and thoughts of suicide, you stop going out, you stop talking to friends, you stop interacting with the world, and that's exactly how depression gets at you even better. Vanessa calls to cheer him up but he's still depressed and feels like there is emptiness inside. Tilly calls and tries to sooth his heart and mind but it just tears him up more. The only way out he can see from the pain is suicide, and they do their utmost to convince him otherwise, but by the end of the night he has shot himself in the head. Then his friend Mary hauls all his stuff away
