"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
Forward yesterday makes me wanna stay
What they said was real makes me wanna steal
Living under house, guess I'm living, I'm a mouse
All's I got is time, got no meaning, just a rhyme
Take time with a wounded hand
'Cause it likes to heal
Take time with a wounded hand
'Cause I like to steal
Take time with a wounded hand
'Cause it likes to heal
I like to steal
I'm half the man I used to be
(For as I feel as the dawn it fades to gray)
Well, I'm half the man I used to be
(For as I feel as the dawn it fades to gray)
Well, I'm half the man I used to be
(For as I feel as the dawn it fades to gray)
Well, I'm half the man I used to be
Half the man I used to be
Feeling uninspired, think I'll start a fire
Everybody run, Bobby's got a gun
Think you're kind of neat, then she tells me I'm a creep
Friends don't mean a thing, guess I'll leave it up to me
Take time with a wounded hand
'Cause it likes to heal
Take time with a wounded hand
'Cause I like to steal
Take time with a wounded hand
'Cause it likes to heal
I like to steal
I'm half the man I used to be

Blue
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.
Punchline
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.
Plastic Bag
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
i agree this song is about change, but more about trying to change and not finding any support, the lack of support gets you down, you're falling back into old habits, and repeating the cycle again.
I agree, but I think it also ties in with people hurting you for trying to live life and alienating yourself from others because you're afraid of repeating past experiences.<br /> <br /> "Take time with a wounded hand 'cause it likes to heal"<br /> <br /> This part is pretty obvious to me. The "wounded hand" is preventing him from giving a handshake; getting to know and investing trust in someone, because he has been wronged and beaten down in the past.
This song is about who you are and who you want to be. also how things change you, I think. I have to agree with everyone else, though. This song is awesome.
This song seems to be about addiction and the personal struggles with it.
Forward yesterday, makes me want to stay --- replaying memories, fast forwarding in your mind to happier times;
What they said was real, makes me want to steal -- this part stumps me a bit. A reference to the family and being raised, but is it a case of being told how much greater/smarter/more talented than anyone else, or is it a case of an abusive situation and finding a way out of it.. stealing away some time.. or literally stealing for the thrill.. maybe stealing to survive poverty -- i just don't know.
"Livin' under house Guess I'm livin', I'm a mouse All's I gots is time Got no meaning, just a rhyme"
To me means living under house arrest, part of his probation-- and the depression that would accompany it, and for lack of a better phrase "Survivor's guilt".. he guesses he's thankful to be alive, but feels like less of a man for accepting the arrangement, maybe less of a man for losing control of his life. Alls I gots is time, reinforces the legal aspect to this, but finds no meaning in his life, no rhyme nor reason for it. In a process of rediscovery of who he thought he was.
Take time with a wounded hand --- hands are our lives, the do so much.. so to say a wounded hand, is to say a wounded spirit or soul. But hands also have the "healing touch". Also means to tread lightly with him, as he a wild card, unsure of himself and how he will react in any given situation.
Guess I like to steal-- can be taken literally, or that he has taken from others in his life as far as trust, infidelities, etc. --- probably why she called him a creep.
Feeling uninspired, think i'll start a fire etc.. just the listlessness, restlessness, uneasy in his own skin.. Bobby's got a gun.. a fleeting thought of suicide?... Reinforced by the "Friends don't mean a thing, Guess I'll leave it up to me".
Anyone who has ever wrestled with depression and/or addiction and relate to this song. There is an emptiness, you feel incomplete. With many nights of introspection until the dawn fades to grey (also alluding to getting older, and not feeling like you have anything to show, especially as far as personal growth goes, for the time)
Obviously a song written from the heart. Simply genius.
scott was on drugs when this song was written!! scott wrote core and libertad sober
i meant wasnt on drugs*
i think that this song is about what you want to do as a person and what is really right and wrong. it is about waiting until something passes over or is not thought about anymore until you do it again b/c if you don't do it anymore your not the same person that you want to be. i think it is a great song i just don't understand how stp has changed so much the songs just dont sound right anymore
Yeah, pretty sure this song has absolutely no true meaning. Hence the line, "All's I gots is time, got no meaning just a rhyme." Probably just "free-writing" with a chorus added to it, in my opinion.
I always thought this song was about Scott's problems with heroin."Wounded hand" meaning his shootin up arm,and "half the man i used to be",expressing his feelings of pain and loss due heroin before he got addicted.
this was written before scott was addicted to heroin
I think it's about lack of motivation. Half the man I used to be refering to himself artisticly... We all hit slumps, and it always feels rotten... dreary... just as he says "All's I gots is time/Got no meaning, just a rhyme". I think that all the rambling unconnected rhymes are to give a feel of unmotivated crap that he's living with, to sort of put you in his shoes... but that's just my opinion. Take it easy, and to each his own interpretation.
you nailed it
nice song
amen
such an understatement... more like FUKCING AMAZING SONG and easily one of the best songs of the 90s
