If you're down, and confused and you don't remember, who you're talking to.
Concentration slips away cause your baby is so far away.
And there's a rose in a fisted glove, and the eagle flies with the dove.
And if you can't be, with the one you love, honey, love the one you're with,
love the one you're with, love the one you're with, love the one you're with.

Don't be angry, don't be sad, don't sit crying over good times you had.
There's a girl, right next to you and she's just waiting for something to do.
And there's a rose in a fisted glove, and the eagle flies with the dove.
And if you can't be, with the one you love, honey, love the one you're with,
love the one you're with, love the one you're with, love the one you're with.

Turn your heartache right into joy. She's a girl and you're a boy.
So get it together, make it nice and you won’t need any more advice.
And there's a rose in a fisted glove, and the eagle flies with the dove.
And if you can't be, with the one you love, honey, love the one you're with,
love the one you're with, love the one you're with, love the one you're with.

General CommentThough I agree with what most people say about this song being about free love, I feel like it may mean something else as well. If you can't be with the one you love, then you are by yourself, right? So you should love the one you're with. Aka you should love yourself because there is nothing wrong with being alone. That is how I interpreted this song and I feel that it's a positive message.

General CommentTotal song of the 70s lol, I swear.

What's cool about this song though, there is no drum set. Its missing one of the key elements of a grooving rock song, yet somehow the absence of it makes no difference to our tapping feet.

General CommentDespite that triviality, this song is actually attributed just to Stephen Stills...but it still rocks. I love it because it speaks the truth about how life might hand you something you might not have wanted. If she is happy with you, you should be happy with her. That's the message and I think it's beautiful.

General CommentThis song is pretty much the theme song for "free love" and their hippie views.

Look through the lyrics again and you will see my point.

General CommentI'm not so sure about that; the lyrics are pretty ambiguous. Is the song about cheating, or is the song about letting go of your past relationships and moving on? It's hard to say, partly because the verses are at once short, sparse, and few. I myself CHOOSE to believe it's the latter; I'm aware of the free love maxims of the seventies, but I find it hard to conceive a song about adultery reaching such a level of popularity.

General CommentThis speaks to me....I'm coming off/in the middle of a tough breakup and this song is telling me to just move on and love whoever comes my way. Though it is hard not to dwell on her...I love her.
