Well guess who I saw today
Standing outside my favorite cafe
Sipping his morning coffee
On my street

I said how are you?
I'm just fine
I think that I recognize that tie
He said sorry I never got to say good-
By the I'm doing much much better
I was just a little under the weather
But pay no mind to me

'Cause you know that
It only hurts when I breathe
And I make believe
That maybe he truly needs me
It only hurts here and there
But doesn't he care?
Doesn't he ever miss me?
It only hurts me when I breathe

So you finally quit smoking these days?
And I like your hair real short by the way
I never could get it out of your face
So if I don't care if they made you go
Tell your parents I said hello
Tell them my life is going just as-
I planned a trip
I'm going somewhere exotic
I will show you the pictures
Tell you all about it for
That's how you leave me

'Cause you know that
It only hurts when I breathe
When I make believe that
Maybe he truly needs me
It only hurts here and there
But doesn't he care?
Doesn't he ever miss me?
It only hurts me when I breathe

So whatcha doin' tomorrow night?
Let's have a drink
I won't bite
He said sure let me just run it by
My wife

It only hurts when I breathe
When I make believe that
Maybe he truly needs me
It only hurts here and there
But doesn't he care?
Doesn't he ever miss me?
It only hurts me when I breathe

General CommentI think that this song is about the point of view of a woman, who ends up meeting an ex-boyfriend after a long time of not seeing each other. They talk about their lives, and we learn that they had a wonderful relationship, but that it ended both badly and unexpectedly. She's been having a hard time getting over it, and is unaware that her ex has moved on. So she is devastated when she finds out...This is only a guess. I have no idea what this song is really about.
