"Fade To Grey" as written by Chris Payne, Midge Ure, and Billy Currie....
Devenir gris
Devenir gris

One man on a lonely platform
One case sitting by his side
Two eyes staring cold and silent
Show fear as he turns to hide

Aaah, we fade to grey (fade to grey)
Aaah, we fade to grey (fade to grey)

Un homme dans une gare isolée
Une valise a ses cotés
Des yeux fixes et froids
Montre de la peur lorsqu'il
Se tourne pour se cacher

Aaah, we fade to grey (fade to grey)
Aaah, we fade to grey (fade to grey)

Sent la pluie comme un été Anglais
Entends les notes d'une chanson lointaine
Sortant de derriere d'un poster
Espérant que la vie ne fut aussi longue

Aaah, we fade to grey (fade to grey)
Aaah, we fade to grey (fade to grey)

Feel the rain like an English summer
Hear the notes from a distant song
Stepping out from a back shop poster
Wishing life wouldn't be so long

Devenir gris

Aaah, we fade to grey (fade to grey)
Aaah, we fade to grey (fade to grey)
Aaah, we fade to grey (fade to grey)
Devenir gris

Aaah, we fade to grey (fade to grey)
Devenir gris

Aaah, we fade to grey (fade to grey)
Aaah, we fade to grey (fade to grey)
Devenir gris

Aaah, we fade to grey (fade to grey)
Aaah, we fade to grey (fade to grey)

General CommentSad sounding dance song. I could be wrong but I think the lyrics were written by Midge Ure and the music was written by Billy Currie and Chris Payne while they were on tour as Gary Numan's backup band. One of the coolest songs of early 80s electronica.

General CommentYou're right, MrLongrove. I don't know where I remember reading that about East Berlin, but this is from the Visage website from the New Wave Complex:

"Midge Ure, Billy Currie (Ultravox) and Chris Payne (Gary Numan band) are credited with writing the song. Gary Numan shed some light on the matter for the Numan Digest. 'As far as I'm concerned Chris and Billy were the driving force behind writing 'Fade To Grey'. They used to work on it during the sound checks on my '79 tour. Cedric (Sharpley - Gary Numan band) was also heavily involved. In those days it was called 'Toot City'.'"

General CommentI believe that Steve, or one of the members of the group, were inspired by this looking at East Berlin or entering East Berlin, where the buildings seemed to "Fade to Grey"...otherwise, simply a brilliant song...

General CommentA real classic, The way the siren sneaks in over the beat is superb, and the whole thing spells real tristesse, not just posing. When I first heard it I thought the chorus was \"We failed to cry!\" -british stiff upper lip? :-)

The \"ah-ah\" bit and its chords were nicked a few years ago by Swedish indie megastars Kent for their single \"Kärleken väntar\" (Love Is Waiting) , also a really good one.

General CommentIs it just me, or does Kelly Osbourne's One Word sound insanely like this song?

General CommentIt's not just you Asteroid. Kelly Osbourne's One Word is a direct rip off of Fade To Grey. I'm surpised she hasn't been sued yet.

General Commentit's said the same thing, english, french...
I didn't knew the members had something to do with gary numan.. I find the whole starting electro scene at 80's fantastic! :D specially the 'dark side' of it...a lot of black pearls and that is one.
the video for this song is amazing... it is used as an ad at VH1... by the way, are those painting famous? like, the boy being paint by the girl looks like imitating J. Caesar.

Song MeaningVisage's "Fade to Grey" worships Satan, in the figure of a cold-eyed wanderer standing on a train platform, who hides away as soon as you see Him. When you fade to grey, it means your body is in the process of dying. In New Age, grey mixes the Ying and Yong together, hence debasing the morals of Man's dignity. This huge 80s hit, both hypnotic and highly depressive, calls the listeners to suicide in the final verse. The video clip abunds with Esoteric references : the ghost ; the carbonated face (vision of hell Fátima); the Satanic red flash turning into a snake on Steve Strange's flesh then biting him ; the lurid glares ; the close up freemason eye ; bestial transexuality. Before blaming Midge Ure, one must bear in mind "Visage" was not a band but a Record project.

General CommentAn amazing song, but the lyrics here are way off. These are compliments of 80's Music Lyrics:

    Devenions gris

One man on a lonely platform
One case sitting by his side
Two eyes staring cold and silent
Show fear as he turns to hide We fade to grey (fade to grey)
We fade to grey (fade to grey)

Feel the rain like an English summer
Hear the notes from a distant song
Stepping out from a back drop poster
Wishing life wouldn't be so long

We fade to grey (fade to grey)
We fade to grey (fade to grey)

The French sections make a lot more sense with these lyrics.
