This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines:
"Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet"
So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other:
"I had all and then most of you"
Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart
"Some and now none of you"
Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship.
This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"
you say hold on
but I feel like I’m slipping away
And you say hold on
but it feels like I’m slipping away
I won’t let you down
The word you said to me
is echoing the sound
of what would never be
I’m standing here alone
the memories remain
The same familiar home
But nothing looks the same
And I’m standing here alone
can’t tell if I’m awake
Reality is gone
In a dream I can’t escape
you say hold on
but I feel like I’m slipping away
And you you say hold on
but I feel like I’m slipping away
I’m getting through it now
I guess it’s plain to see
that everything I am
is not everything you need
I’m standing here alone
can’t tell if I’m awake
Reality is gone
In the dream I will escape
you say hold on
but it feels like I’m slipping away
And you say hold on
but I feel like I’m slipping away
I’m standing here alone
can’t tell if I’m awake
and it feels like I’m slipping away
Reality is gone
In a dream I can’t escape
and I feel like I’m slipping away
but I feel like I’m slipping away
And you say hold on
but it feels like I’m slipping away
I won’t let you down
The word you said to me
is echoing the sound
of what would never be
I’m standing here alone
the memories remain
The same familiar home
But nothing looks the same
And I’m standing here alone
can’t tell if I’m awake
Reality is gone
In a dream I can’t escape
you say hold on
but I feel like I’m slipping away
And you you say hold on
but I feel like I’m slipping away
I’m getting through it now
I guess it’s plain to see
that everything I am
is not everything you need
I’m standing here alone
can’t tell if I’m awake
Reality is gone
In the dream I will escape
you say hold on
but it feels like I’m slipping away
And you say hold on
but I feel like I’m slipping away
I’m standing here alone
can’t tell if I’m awake
and it feels like I’m slipping away
Reality is gone
In a dream I can’t escape
and I feel like I’m slipping away

Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,
Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example:
"'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/

Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran shares a short story of reconnecting with an old flame on “American Town.” The track is about a holiday Ed Sheeran spends with his countrywoman who resides in America. The two are back together after a long period apart, and get around to enjoying a bunch of fun activities while rekindling the flames of their romance.
this is supposed to be a site where you tell what you think the songs means... so I'll tell you what i think...=)
you say hold on but I feel like Im slipping away And you say hold on but it feels like Im slipping away----- They were in a serious relationship and something has torn them apart... sounds like he's going in one direction and she's going in another. He doesn't know how much longer he can hold and try to make things work....it's hard to fake a smile and be happy when your really not.... he wants to give up cause he sees where the future is going. They aren't on the same page, and life just seems to have a way of doing that to people!!!!
I wont let you down The word you said to me is echoing the sound of what would never be----- by this I think he means the word "LOVE" and he has this dream of the way he wants to live his life and the kind of happiness he imagines.....but it's too far away in time....he doesn't know if he can wait that long
Im standing here alone the memories remain The same familiar home But nothing looks the same And Im standing here alone cant tell if Im awake Reality is gone In a dream I cant escape------ Yeah he obviously had a fight with her and she took her belongings and now the house is empty....and he stands there thinking of all the memories that were made in that room and he's starting to accept the reality of it!! The dream he can't escape is the life he made for himself...he is drowning in depression and he can't escape what has already been done!!!
Im getting through it now I guess its plain to see that everything I am is not everything you need------ Well she broke up with him..... from the way he said that.... he doesn't feel good enough for her.......but he just ran out of time.... he couldn't do everything he wanted cause of timing.
