"Raven" as written by and Bob/gaudio Crewe....
Lies and reason you give
Too much is not enough
Leave, what you see leave alone
Someone else to go

Romance holds you to tea, yeah
Sip it like you're typical
My love is what you make of it
Brothers and sisters, it's not enough
Not enough

Talk, call, talking of leading the way
Won't ya give any lie?
Of all the ways
Won't ya lie with me?

Man, I've no Raven to see here
Flies the blackest way
What you give when you get nothing
Is everything you give

All been tossed away
Read, light your morning candles
Make your way
All wise men today grieve
It knows no better thing

All I leave here, a way to send you all down, down, down
All my worries is where the girl will be found, found, found
All my worries of all those things that I dreamed and dreamed and dreamed
All I leave is, I have to say
It's nothing more than my point of view

It's hard and cold tonight
You're warming by a fire
Oh, sweet juice
Drink tonight
Take me while I'm out

No, no Raven to see here
It imitates beauty well
Black bird from a dark Heaven
Oh, won't you keep living a lie

All God tossed away
Read while you know
You know things fade to grey
Oh, what came of grace
Oh, the morning and the rain

All my worries warn enough to roam, roam, roam
Fade away here, the girl will go round and round and round
Hey, love
What was the greatest thing you
Moments in the cold rain
Here to say there's nothing great that you wouldn't do

Fly, Raven
Won't you guide me?
Oh, what's the reason?
Won't you guide me?
Wait, now, what is the Raven?
Won't you come to me?
What you did with the same grace at all
Won't you keep living a lie

All been tossed away
Read all you'll have ever known
I believe
All I know today
Read all to believe

General CommentGreat song, Dave's voice is absolutely critical in it, in fact i would say that it is another instrument itself, as it is in all his songs. Im sad to see how few people have commented or even viewed the songs off of the Lillywhite sessions, or the upcoming cd "Busted Stuff". great song

General Commentas far as i've been able to find, the lyrics have gone through three solid "evolutionary stages" - pre Summer So Far, Summer So Far (Lillywhites), 2002 tour. the lyrics above are the pre SSF ones (sure, these probably changed every night for quite some time). the SSF lyrics can be found at dmbml.com/music/lyrics/… way down at the bottom. the 2002 lyrics are as follows: Watcha got, watcha got
    In your hand
    Father said to Son
I’ve got the whole world here, daddy
‘tween my fingers and my thumb.

You take care of it please,
    For it’s the only one.
But it’ll take me a lifetime, old man
    To undo what you’ve done.

    Undo what you’ve done.
Oh come on now, the boy
    Now what would Jesus do.
Shake his head like the angry mother spoke
The boy and say, I did what I could do.

    You take care of these,
    For it’s the only one.
And it’ll take you ten lifetimes, boy
    To undo what I’ve done.

    Boy shrugged, walked away,
    The man stood and watched
    As he was leaving.
    The boy just walked away
The man stood and hold thinking.

    One hand is empty,
The other hand holds the gun.
    Everything seems open,
Everything is shut down, down, down
    Begin to (enter? end it?)
Is it really just to go round, around, around
And when it stop, yeah, its
Nothing more than nothing more than
    My point of view.

    Watcha got, watcha got
    In your head?
    Your secret’s safe with me.
    Well, I found the truth
    My friend
Let me whisper in your ear.

Take good care of it please,
It’s the only one there is
    Can I twist it, please,
Can I give it just a little twist?

But boy shrugged, and walked away,
    The man stood, and watched
    As he was leaving.
    The boy just walked away,
    The man stood alone twisting.

    One hand is empty, oh,
    The other holds the gun.
    Everything is open.
Everything is shut down, down, down,
    No one is holding
Even if, even if it’s (?),
    You never know at all,
The ground beneath you’s nothing more
    Than one point of view.

But boy shrugged and walked away,
    The man stood and watched
    As he was leaving.
    The boy just walked away,
    The man stood alone twisting.

    One hand is bleeding,
The other hand holds the gun.
    Everything is open, oh,
Everything is shut down, down, down
    No one is holding,
Even if, even if you know,
    You never know at all,
The ground beneath you’s nothing more
    Than one point of view.

    But boy shrugged walked away,
    The man stood and watched
    As he was leaving.
The man just stood there twisting.

General CommentWhen I got Busted Stuff I noticed immeaditly all the lyric changes from Lillywhite sessions, but this song espically. I can't really figure it out. I see the Priest thing, but i still need to be sold on that point. I see that the Man is trying to sell a good point: "..You take care of it please,
For it’s the only one." But is really bad. As in he was 'twisting' the 'truth'. i put in quotes becaus i still think it's all metaphoric.
Maybe the man is self-destructive, cuz one hand's bleeding and the other holds the gun. Or something hypocritical like that. Anythought on what he did? As in "..take me a lifetime to undo what you've done" Boy's probably trying to fix something bad that the man did. i think..maybe...perhaps...?
Inside the cover it says: "Shake his head like and angry mother, SMOKE the boy..." Still tryin to figure that one out.
OTHER PEOPLE: speak! i really want to hear other takes on this one!

"The ground beneath you’s nothing more
Than one point of view. "
    Favorite quote, interesting point

General CommentI can't believe nobody has commented on this one yet, b/c In my opinion, this version is the best! Alright, this is my interpretation of the song- When the father is "giving" the world to his son, i think DAve is speaking metaphorically and the father is really telling his son that he only has one life to live- so live a good one, don't screw it up. The father has obviosulsy had a not so good life, himself. The buys just walks away, as if he doesn't even care- and the man just sits there thinking. The gun and bleeding hand represent all the terrible things in this world, the pains and hurts of life.
"The ground beneath is nothing more
than one point of view" -That's saying, some people are so far from the truth. Truth is is something that is discovered, NOT created. Everyone wants to have there own point of veiw and make there own truth, when in reality, there is only one truth, and that is the same Jesus Dave is talkin about in this song. (only sometimes, Dave seems to have a misunderstanding of who God really is. i don't know Dave's personla walk with God, so i can't judge him, but based on how depressing some of his lyrics are, its hard for me to believe that he knows of the Joy, strength, and awesome peace that God offers.
As for the rest of the song, the part where he says,
"Well, I found the truth, friend
Let me whisper in your ear
Take good care of it, please
It's the only one there is
    Can I twist it, please?
Can I give it just a little twist?"
people always want to twist the truth so that they can still have room to live how they want and be a "christain" (notice i put that in quotes b/c a true christain lives how God wants them to, not how they choose) as a matter of fact, i'm probably going to get a lot of replies to this b/c people will get offended. So anyways, that explains about all of it. ~Bekah

General CommentInteresting points, and although i'm not going to pick a fight or anything, hey- whatever floats your boat, i generally get a vibe from DMB's music that is like, do your own thing, enjoy life because that's what it's here for. As in Trippin Billies, Best of Whats Around, etc. Musikrazy, it might be interesting for you to see the other folder for this song.
In this version, i see the father/man figure as more of the bad guy because he is the one to twist the truth, and while he's trying to give guidence to the boy, he himself is guilty of crimes; "...holding the gun." Althought i didn't buy the "father = Father" thing at first, the more i think it over, the more i see it, unfortunatly. I doubt Dave set out to make a song about abusive priests, but non the less, the analagy does apply.

General CommentOkay, Ive never seen the lyrics to the PSSF, and Im thinking that they are nothing like SSF and 2002. Im looking at both versions of Raven (SSF/2002) and thinking the picture is much bigger than a specific situation. The second version of Raven (SSF) I thought was about mankind and the destruction of ourselves. He makes reference to God and how 'we' can avoid the "Raven" in the world. But he still realizes that it is only his point of veiw. If you think about what a Raven represents, its self explanitory. The BS(2002) version of Raven is still on the same theme, I think. I think the boy is on verge of self-destruction and the man is trying to reason with him. The boy blames the man and the man also blames himself, but still he tells the boy "to think" about what would Jesus do. "Smoke" I think represents the boy firering the gun. The man stood alone thinking. The "twisting" reminded me of the twisting of a barrel of a gun, maybe could have something to do with the amount of young people today who get ahold of guns and make bad decisions, the man stood there twisting, when I think of a man twisting it could be the same thing as, him turning around, looking at the boy walking away, like he was disappointed. at the end of the song he says, open instead of bleeding, that could have so many different meanings. I have to think abou the song more.
