From a distance, I hear them call.
For you and for me,
For everything they see.
On a mission, losing their minds.
For love and for hate,
For freedom they can't take.
Your decision, you'd go along.
And give up your life to fight
For what went wrong.

And you know that I know
That you won't come back again.
And you know that I'd go
But I'd lose myself in it.
I'll wait into the summer and into the winter,
I'll wait for you, I will.
I'll hold onto you tightly and pray for you nightly.
I'll wait for you.

In the twilight, hours pass slow.
The minutes roll by,
As summer turns to snow.
I decided, I'm not that strong.
I couldn't go out and fight
What I know is wrong.

And you know that I know
That you won't come back again.
And you know that I'd go
But I'd lose my faith in it.
I'll wait into the summer and into the winter,
I'll wait for you, I will.
I'll hold onto you tightly and pray for you nightly.
I'll wait for you.

From a distance, I hear them call.
For you and for me,
For everything they see.
On a mission, losing their minds.
For love and for hate,
For freedom...

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
