Everything seemed perfect
Everything seemed right
Things were going just as planned
But then you broke my heart and crushed all my hopes
You stupid bitch

For the first time in my life
I have someone that I really like
You said you didn’t care but it was just pretend
So you bitched me out for hanging with my friends

Everything seemed perfect
Everything seemed right
Things were going just as planned
But then you broke my heart and crushed all my hopes
You stupid bitch

For a year our feelings were strong
We’d liked each other for so long
But the feelings faded and you pulled a trick
So you kissed me after sucking someone else’s dick

Everything seemed perfect
Everything seemed right
Things were going just as planned
But then you broke my heart and crushed all my hopes
You stupid bitch

I finally met a girl who I thought was the one
I hit the jackpot, at least I’d thought I’d won
I didn’t know til this guy came into my life
He said “Hey man, back off! She’s already my wife”

Everything seemed perfect
Everything seemed right
Things were going just as planned
But then you broke my heart and crushed all my hopes
You stupid bitch

Is anything really perfect?
Is anything ever right?
Does it ever go just as planned?
Cuz then you broke my heart and crushed all my hopes
You stupid bitch

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
