"What Do I Do Now?" as written by and Wener....
Quickly she came, dressed up for fame,
Riding her perfume downstairs.
Make-up like glue, she danced 'round the room,
To the sound of the corduroy flares.
Let's go to town, taxis all round,
We could stop for a couple of beers.
He looks at it all, stifles a yawn,
She tries not to look like she cares.

What do I do now?
Are we going under?
What did I do wrong?
I thought we had it sorted
Out the other day
Maybe I'm just stupid
Can't we try again?
No-one told me it was raining.

Can't face a club,
They walk to a nearby pub,
Watch a couple of bands.
Draining the glass, they walk home at last,
Reaching for each other's hands.
Nothing is said, he goes to bed
Dreaming of her on his own.
She stays up all week, watching him sleep,
Scared that she'll wake up alone.

What do I do now?
Are we going under?
What did I do wrong?
I thought we had it sorted
Out the other day
Maybe I'm just stupid
Can't we try again?
No-one told me it was raining.

I'll miss you every day of your life
And oh, you'll feel it too,
You're not that strong,
You know I'm onto you.
I'll miss you every day of your life
And maybe when you're dead, I'll get some rest,
From holding onto you.

What do I do now?
Are we going under?
What did I do wrong?
I thought we had it sorted
Is there someone else?
Or am I too familiar?
Was it when I said I wanted to have children?
Tore up all your photos,
Didn't feel too clever,
Spent the whole of Sunday
Sticking you together.
Now I'd like to call you,
But I feel too awkward.
Some things need explaining,
No-one told me it was raining.

General CommentNo need to explain it's pretty obvious really.

    But this bit:

I'll miss you every day of your life
And maybe when you're dead, I'll get some rest,
    From holding onto you.

Reminds me of my Grandad's reaction to my Nan having alzeimer's. VERY sad. :(

    Always loved this song though.

General CommentHmm... I haven't heard of Sleeper; I have this song off Elvis Costello's "All This Useless Beauty."
I love this song; it's so sweet and so sad. I've been in this situation, when two people care about one another but realize the relationship is failing.

They both want everything to work, and have tried to repair things before ("I thought we had it sorted / Out the other day"), they secretly blame themselves for whatever's going wrong ("What did I do wrong?"), but the worst part is, they don't *know* what that even is ("No one told me it was raining").

They still care about one another; "reaching for each other's hands," and that they're each terrified of the other person leaving. But they know they're doomed, and both of them can say "I'll miss you every day of your life."

Someone tries to make a decisive action ("Tore up all your photos") but regrets it because he/she still cares about the other person ("didn't feel too clever"). They each try to come up with concrete reasons for why things are failing ("Is there someone else? Or am I too familiar? / Was it when I said I wanted to have children?"), but the truth is, there isn't any real, preventable reason. These things just happen, sometimes...

That's what I take from this song. You can look at it either way, as either depressing or comforting. It's sad to think that two people can, despite best intentions and best attempts, fall apart like this. But... it's also kind of comforting to think about this if you've been in the same boat; to know that some things inevitably collapse helps you avoid those "What-ifs" and feelings of guilt that can drive you insane.

...Phew. That was long-winded. Aside from all that, why don't more people comment on this song? It's gorgeous!
