There's a point, it's a step between falling and breaking and laying flat broken in pieces. There's a note you can hold that sounds (but doesn't feel) like you're happy to be alive. She holds it in like we all hold it in until we're too full to take in a breath. A translucent body that retracts when you reach for it, pained at the touch and indifferent to love, lays asleep to us all, awake to her sadness. Why does she seem so cruel? How can they be so cruel? If i could only stay alive long enough to stop feeling this way.

How are these not the lyrics to "Happy to be alive"? Infact, have you even read the lyrics?

"that sounds (but doesn't feel) like you're happy to be alive." Bit of a give away if you ask me...

These are the correct lyrics for the song "Happy to be Alive." The reason why people think they're wrong is because the track listing on the CD itself was printed wrong, thus the mp3s of the songs were tagged wrong and thus everyone confuses them all. But this is definitely "Happy to be Alive".

    the right tracklist is

    1. intro
    2. typical fashion
    3. headless, sleeping soundly
    4. calm and secure

    6. perfectly fucked
    7. what's left of "shitlife"
    8. happy to be alive

    Memory

This reminds me of the years my sister spent struggling with OCD. It was hell for my entire family. She became gradually more obsessive until the girl I knew was gone. She would become almost manic and then collapse for days at a time. I was young when this happened, and it took me far to long to realize what was happening. I know now that I aggravated some of her symptoms, and I feel intense guilt about it.

Several lines from the song remind me of those times.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.
