The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
(Sing it girl)
How ya doin', honey, baby
You know I don't ask for much but
For a girl spendin' time alone
Can be pretty rough
But I get a knock on my door
You know it's yours for sure
We can't wait for the bedroom so
We just hit the floor (sing it girl)
Is y'all alright?
I don't know
But I know what's happened to me, girl, hey (sing it y'all)
Is y'all alright?
Uh, break it down now (sing it girls)
Is y'all alright?
I don't know
But I know what's happened to me, girl
Is y'all alright?
Uh, break it down now
See you gotta work it out
See you gotta work it out
A brotha gotta work it out
Child, blow your horn now
Come on, child, blow your horn now
Child, blow your horn now
Come on, child, blow your horn now
So we shakin' back and forth now
Just keep it coming babe
Treat my body like a guitar
You got to, you got to keep on strumming babe
But in the back of my mind
(I wonder) is it gonna be the last time
Well if it ain't nobody loving and you gon' keep it coming
Well baby with me that's fine
Is y'all alright?
I don't know but I know what's happening to me girl
Is y'all alright?
Uh, break it down now (sing it, c'mon)
Is y'all alright?
I don't know but I know what's happening to me, girl (c'mon)
Is y'all alright, uh?
Huh, break it down now
See you gotta work it out (sing it)
See you gotta work it out
Brotha gotta work it out, ohh whoa
Child, blow your horn now (hey)
Come on, child, blow your horn now
Child, blow your horn now

Like you don't wanna let go

'Cause boy you working it out

'Cause I (I) had the sweetest time (the sweetest time)

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
