I've got your picture
Of me and you
You wrote "I love you"
I wrote "me too"
I sit there staring and there's nothing else to do

Oh it's in color
Your hair is brown
Your eyes are hazel
And soft as clouds
I often kiss you when there's no one else around

I've got your picture, I've got your picture
I'd like a million of you all 'round my cell
I want the doctor to take your picture
So I can look at you from inside as well
You've got me turning up and turning down, I'm turning in, I'm turning 'round

I'm turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese, I really think so
Turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese, I really think so
I'm turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese, I really think so
Turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese, I really think so

I've got your picture, I've got your picture
I'd like a million of them all 'round my cell
I want a doctor to take your picture
So I can look at you from inside as well
You've got me turning up and turning down, I'm turning in, I'm turning 'round

I'm turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese, I really think so
Turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese, I really think so
I'm turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese, I really think so
Turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese, I really think so

No sex, no drugs, no wine, no women
No fun, no sin, no you, no wonder it's dark
Everyone around me is a total stranger
Everyone avoids me like a cyclone ranger
Everyone

That's why I'm turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese, I really think so
Turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese, I really think so
I'm turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese, I really think so
Turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese, I really think so
Turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese, I really think so
Turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese, I really think so
Turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese, I really think so
(Think so think, so think so, think so)
Turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese, I really think so

Look, you shouldn't believe everything you see on the tele, you know? This song has double meanings. It really depends on the way you look at it. One way, would be the obvious-Masturbation. Okay, we've got that. But think about it. "Oh it's in color Your hair is brown Your eyes are hazel And soft as clouds I often kiss you when there's no one else around"...He might be talking about falling in love with a Japanese girl, and the whole world around him shuns him, because he isn't Asian. He might feel that he is so in love that he, too, is starting to feel a bit Japanese.

Or...He could be talking about masturbation. ^_~

He's not in jail - he's in a psych ward obsessing over a picture of this girl which he would like a million of. It's not 'cyclone ranger', its "everyone avoids me like a psyched lone ranger"

well, when dave originally wrote this song, it supposedly was a love song...and later when interviewers asked him if it was actually about masturbation or not he'd answer no or yes, depending on his mood .. so basically you can decipher it any way you want to

Masturbation is pretty much a "lone ranger" activity.

It is amazing how on idiot says something and the rest of the idiots pick up on and before you know you have a pseudo-fact.

It is obvious that no one here has actually seen/heard the REPEATED interviews by Dave Fenton (the guy wrote the song) about what the song means and it is NOT about masturbation.

If fact Fenton made up the term one day when he woke from a dream and thought it would be good in a song. The song was and is about love nothing more.

Term itself did not get used as a euphemism for masturbation until AFTER the song was released and well some idiot came up with the notion and said it was a fact.

If you don't believe me, and I know you don't here it from Fenton's own lips -

I heard that this song was about the guy going gay. I don't believe that at all, & agree with the masturbation thing, but what is this part about..."No sex, no drugs, no wine, no women, No fun, no sin, no you, no wonder it's dark"?

Why does the guy have to be in jail if he has a pic? You can jack off with a pic anywhere, not just in jail. And I do think that's what this song is about.

I've got your picture, I've got your picture I'd like a million of them over myself ..i thought that part said "i'd like a million of them over my cell" everyone's been saying it's about being in jail, so wouldn't that make sense. also, if this song is, in fact, about masturbation, what does this "Everyone around me is a total stranger Everyone avoids me like a psyched lone-ranger" part mean? how does that relate to masturbation?

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
