Only love
Can make it rain
The way the beach is kissed by the sea
Only love
Can make it rain
Like the sweat of lovers
Laying in the fields

Love reign o'er me
Love reign o'er me, rain on me, rain on me

Only love
Can bring the rain
That makes you yearn to the sky
Only love
Can bring the rain
That falls like tears from on high

Love reign o'er me, rain on me, rain on me
Love reign o'er me, rain on me, rain on me

On the dry and dusty road
The nights we spend apart alone
I need to get back home to cool, cool rain
I can't sleep and I lay and I think
The night is hot and black as ink
Oh God, I need a drink of cool, cool rain

Love reign o'er me, rain over me, over me, over me, oh
Love reign o'er me, whoa, on me

Love

Unbelievable song, probably my favorite song by The Who, maybe my all time favorite song ever. I love the part starting 'On the dry and dusty road'. This song is so great, Roger just tears it up with his voice. To me, this song is a sad, emotional, heart rending defeat of the main character, Jimmy. He's given up completely, and it's incredible. Best sogn ever!

I particularly like the play on the word 'reign'. Townshend's song is essentially a plea for love to dominate, control and "reign o'er" him. However, there's also strong references to rain and the cleansing effect of water in the song.

It's not about any particular person, though. It has to do with the schizophrenic Jimmy choosing to take his life down a sturdier, less violent path than that of the mods.

just finished listening to quadrophenia for the first time OMG ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS I HAVE EVER HEARD. nearly every song is great, its creative, and its entertaining. love the puns throughout the album (can you sea/see the real me; love rain/reign o'er me; those are the ones i found). i think i kinda understand the ocean references now: the character, Jimmy, guess, has kind of an ebbing and changing personality, but what he really wants to be (and i guess achieves at the end) is a stable rock, who can endure the pounding sea and rain (making this up off the top of my head so stick with me). about the song, i guess tryin to redo the emotion they put into Listening to You, and did a pretty good job of it too. i have a Quadrophenia shirt, but i wore it a lot before i downloaded this album so now i feel really bad about myself. looks like im goin to have to see the movie now! ;-)

The song concerns the main character of Quadrophenia, Jimmy, having a personal crisis and stealing a boat to go off to a small island.

As Pete Townshend described the song:

[It] refers to Meher Baba's one time comment that rain was a blessing from God; that thunder was God's Voice. It's another plea to drown, only this time in the rain. Jimmy goes through a suicide crisis. He surrenders to the inevitable, and you know, you know, when it's over and he goes back to town he'll be going through the same shit, being in the same terrible family situation and so on, but he's moved up a level. He's weak still, but there's a strength in that weakness. He's in danger of maturing.

I had a strong spiritual experience with this song years ago. The rain started falling as I was in a prayer circle with three other camp counselors. The song wasn't playing at the time but it immediately came to mind as the rain fell on the roof of the chapel. After three years the song still resonates in my soul.

^^^^Because In Quadrophernia each side of Jimmy(he had four sides) represented a band member. Each band member had a song representing this. Pete's was Love Reign O'er Me, Keith's was Bell Boy, Roger's was Helpless Dancer and John's was Is It Me?

Quadropheia is a story and at the end of the story, Jimmy steals a boat and takes it to a rock out on the sea. What happens out on the rock is described in this song.

Jimmy has taken a boat out to the rock and climbed up, only for the boat to float away. The wind is strong, there is thunder in the distance and it has started to rain. Jimmy is convinced he is going to die and begins to focus on what is going on around him. He realises that every drop of rain is going into the ocean and becoming part of it. He finally understands that he is like the ocean and his four personalities are drops of water. He has to accept that he can't be a tough guy, a romantic, a bloody lunatic or a hypocritical beggar in isolation; he is and always will be all four. He must learn to love and embrace this, and Townshend has said that ultimately the hypocrite becomes the dominant personality because of this acceptance of the four incompatible aspects of Jimmy.

I don't think Jimmy dies in the end. In the movie, you only see his scooter go flying off the cliff. It's always been very abstract. In my opinion, at the end of the story, Jimmy grows up some. He recognizes the multiple conflicting aspects of his personality and he chooses the lover to be the dominant one.

I just watched the film with Sandler as well. This song really spoke out to me. It's beautiful and it's really helping me get through a rough time in my life. I'm going to listen to Quadrophenia today while cleaning around the house.

The Night We Met
Lord Huron
This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines: "Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet" So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other: "I had all and then most of you" Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart "Some and now none of you" Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship. This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Dreamwalker
Silent Planet
I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
