"Surfing With A Spoon" as written by Martin Rotsey, Robert Hirst, James Moginie, Peter Garrett and Andrew James....
Well you knew from the start
That a one way loving wouldn't last
You think I'm moving slowly girl
i tell you, you're moving way too fast

Working in the city from 9 to 5
Traffic on the highway gonna blow my mind
Surfing with a spoon all the rest of the time
Oh yeah, all the rest of time

You better find your way without me
'Cause I'm heading for the coast in june
Don't talk about me when I'm gone
You know I couldn't leave too soon

I'm back in town, you're still around
I guess I'll have to stay away
I'm going up north where the weather's fine
And I'm living it from day to day

General CommentWhat a great album! I've just rediscoved the album (not a dud song on it). Bought the album after the first time I saw them at the Pier Hotel in Frankston when they first started touring Melbourne for this album (blew everyone away). I'm convinced that surfing with a spoon is about Heroin as "Smack "was everywhere and everyone was using at the time. Hope Peter can be talked into playing again as the rest of the boys are all gigging and ready to go!

General CommentThis is my favourite Oils song.
It came from them at the time before the got all political.
Its about not wanting to be tied down to anyone or anything, spending your holidays surfing and the rest of the time thinking about your next surf.

General CommentActually "surfing with a spoon" is a euphemistic Australian analogy for shooting heroin (typically the powder is mixed with water in a spoon, then heated, then injected). The song is about being stuck in a city, desperately wanting to leave and go surfing, but compensating with the self-destructive alternative: heroin. About the day-to-day drudgery of a 9-5 job keeping him from what he really wants to be doing, and what he does to get to a time when he CAN do what he wants. Some believe "surfing with a spoon" should be interpreted more literally as guys wishing their were surfing and thinking about it while using spoons to play-surf in soup/cereal/coffee, whatever (hey, I do this), but I lived in Australia and don't believe they would have used a heroin metaphor if they didn't mean it.
