In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
it's perfectly suited
this uniform grey
there are no bearings
to the day
I came down from the air
and I'll leave by boat
I'm down with your rainy town
out on the spit
with the biggest port around
my friend is on the way
he's bringing my coat
oh you don't do, what I want you to
but I haven't been
through what you've been through
and we could use that
as an excuse
if that's what you choose
if that's what you choose
well it was kinda hard
to pull away
he said "Buck up baby,
it's okay
The sunlight on the floor will always fall."
and I meant to write it on the plane
high above my earthly pain
but I slept right through the flight
and that was all
oh you don't do, what I want you to
but I haven't been
through what you've been through
and we could use that
as an excuse
if that's what you choose
if that's what you choose
this uniform grey
there are no bearings
to the day
I came down from the air
and I'll leave by boat
I'm down with your rainy town

@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday".
I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.

Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran shares a short story of reconnecting with an old flame on “American Town.” The track is about a holiday Ed Sheeran spends with his countrywoman who resides in America. The two are back together after a long period apart, and get around to enjoying a bunch of fun activities while rekindling the flames of their romance.
i think that she means to imply that the weather or sky is a uniform grey... in the rainy town.. where her friend lives, the friend that dissapoints her. but it's okay, he's been through a lot.
Such a good song!
Don't ask me what it means though
This one always makes me think... Uniform Grey as in... a grey uniform? Or uniform grey as in... everything is grey. It's a grey area I guess.
this song reminds me of Prince Rupert, BC, where i grew up. the airport is on an island, so you fly in and then take a ferry and a bus to get into town. it does have the biggest port around, and it is one of the rainiest towns in BC, if not Canada. i have no idea if sarah has even been to Prince Rupert before, but on a personal level those are the memories that this song stirs up. a gorgeous song.
I saw her live last year and she said this song was about some time she spent on the east coast.
what a beautiful song...the lyrics are mesmerizing. I'm from Victoria, British Columbia and this song definetly reminds me of the West Coast
I think this song is about a woman who travels to meet a guy, but things don't go well and she ends up having to leave..I've had a very similar thing happen with this one girl
I always assumed she was singing about Burlington, Ontario, her hometown because it's on the coast of Lake Ontario.
But the traveling idea makes sense.
Anyway, I absolutely LOVE this song. Probably my favourite by Sarah Harmer.
