"Suicide Is Painless" as written by Johnny Mandel and Michael B Altman....
Through early morning fog I see
Visions of the things to be
The pains that are withheld for me
I realize and I can see...
That suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please.
I try to find a way to make
All our little joys relate
Without that ever-present hate
But now I know that it's too late, and...
The game of life is hard to play
I'm gonna lose it anyway
The losing card I'll someday lay
So this is all I have to say.
The only way to win is cheat
And lay it down before I'm beat
And to another give my seat
For that's the only painless feat.
The sword of time will pierce our skins
It doesn't hurt when it begins
But as it works its way on in
The pain grows stronger...watch it grin, but...
A brave man once requested me
To answer questions that are key
Is it to be or not to be
And I replied 'oh why ask me?'
'Cause suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please.
...and you can do the same thing if you please.

General CommentA great song from a great movie, this song encapsulates the frustrated irony of MASH.

Anyway, its supposed to be ironic, not serious. Its not pro-suicide. Used in the movie MASH, specifically in the instance that a dentist was considering suicide because, as I recall, he thought he was gay. (which he wasn't, he was just disturbed)

General CommentSuch a hauntingly beautiful song. It really conveys the sense of apathy and hopelessness that comes about with depression and suicide. And to think that it was written by a 14-year-old. (Trivia time: It was written by Mike Altman, the son of the movie's director, Robert Altman. Mike got a lot richer than his dad from the movie.)

General CommentI watched MASH, the TV Series, for quite a long time and always loved the intro (I don't mention the rest, because everybody has to love MASH), but when I first saw the movie it was like a relevation. Suddenly the mood created by the instrumental version made perfekt sense. One of the best songs ever to come forth from the mind of a 14-year-old!

General CommentEverytime I watch the TV show I start singing the words. Once you know it has words its hard not to.

Oh and Stewie's drunken version on Family Guy was great!

General CommentI think the funniest thing ever was to hear this song while sitting in a Caffe, propbably it's because people listen to the music but not to the words... although for me its perfect lyrics
