"Ideas As Opiates" as written by and Roland Orzabal....
Say what you want
Say what you will
Cause I find you think what makes it easier

And lies spread on lies
We don't care
Belief is our relief
We don't care

General CommentWell, not to dispute a posting that's over a year old, but I don't think it's just about religion.

There are all sorts of ideas that act as opiates. Even secular beliefs can be things that placate you or sedate you and keep you from digging any deeper and looking at what's really going on around you. I think it's unfair to necessarily place the source of all blinding and dogmatic ideologies at religion's doorstep.

General CommentThe song is fairly straightforward, its about religion. Tears For Fears apparently arent religious.

General CommentI always thought this song was a direct reply to the rumors Orzabel and Smith were a couple.

I don't know where I heard that but then that was almost 30 years ago. Knowing they weren't gay I just figured the rumors were torrent then and Orazabel wrote this song because of them.

In response to the above comment I NEVER ONCE thought religion was the reason. I can't figure out where he got that impression.

Whatever the reason the way they put "believe what you want, I don't care" into a meaningful yet enjoyable song is a gift.

General CommentSometimes you will tell yourself that everything is allright.

    It's all about the ego.

General CommentI think it's basically a prespective on life that every idea is an opiate or abstraction from the nothingness from which we are trying to avoid. Roland must not think that anything in life really matters (as mentioned in "Quiet Ones") and basically everything we think and do in life is like a dream-like illusion trying to escape that reality.

I think he also wrote this when he was 18.
