"Fond Affections" as written by Mark Alan Cox, Gary Asquith, Michael Derek Allen, Marco Pirroni and Dorothy Prior....
Fond affections are never said.
They're only sung in songs.
I never was naive enough to know when I was wrong.
There's no light at the end of it all.
Let's all sit down and cry.
There's no light at the beginning.
Let's all sit down and cry.
Now it's time to say goodbye.
Now it's being forced upon you.
It's just that person by your side remaining distant.
Now the winter's growing close.
The days are getting older.
I can tell by your face
that your heart is getting colder.
There's no light at the end of it all.
Let's all sit down and cry.
There's no light at the beginning.
Let's all sit down and cry.

General CommentSo beautiful, so melancholy, so touching. The TMC version is better than the already-great Rema Rema version. Unfortunately Rema Rema don't seem to merit a page here at Song Meanings...I'd like some lyrics to their "theme song," "Rema Rema." The Big Black version is not terribly faithful lyrically.

General CommentSo bleak. To me this song is about death and the ultimate end of everything including 'fond affections'. The end of life will be as the beginning was, "There is no light at the end of it all" as there was nothing before we were born. "There's no light in the beginning"
But what is even more bleak is that when we are in that death bed, when it is being 'forced upon you' we will either be very old or very sick, or both and that person next to us, waiting for us to die, will probably be either repulsed by our decrepit age or will be as old & cold as ourselves (Now it's just that person by your side remaining distant). In any case, even our loving partners love will cool (I can tell by your face that your heart is getting colder).

Basically, there is nothing to look forward to. Let's all sit down and cry. It's bleak, awful, but honest & a brilliant translation of the music.
