You Slide out at night to show yourself
you mean to hang yourself on the wall
with the hems you call your friends.
You've memorized a thousand lines and
kissed a thousand guys but none packed
more than wood.

And still you wake up, the taste of the
night before has grown somehow. You
take off your makeup, you're free from
their eyes and all they laugh about.

Sailboats that never float and lids of lead
that hold your ego down. What's it take
to bend the lens? Well as you can see I
really know but I can't amend the trend
towards the rocks wielding the knives
beneath your breast and all the the waves
that never break within our sight. So come on
treat me right.

If you could keep him you'd dub him
"The rock what aced 'em two to one"
but the powder from your empty boxes
was ground from your whole empty youth.
And so you woke up, the taste of the
night before has grown somehow. You
take off your makeup, and you're free
from their eyes and all they laugh about.

I dunno exactly what the song is saying, but I'll take a stab at it. I do love this song, it sorta makes me laugh but sad at the same time. This girl is getting used by these guys who "never pack more than wood" but perhaps she does not mind it, she's chosen that life for herself. She's a party girl who lets guys take advantage of her.

Instead of "was ground from your whole empty youth." It's "resound".

Another amazing Shins song. I love this part for some reason "Well as you can see I really know, but never can amend the trend towards the rocks wielding the knives beneath your breasts."

a pretty girl who takes time to make herself beautiful. but she looses control out at parties and she gets taken advantage of. she flirts with good intentions but it always ends up being about the guys wanting nuthing but to get in her pants. and she sort of doesnt get it and seems helpless so she keeps on doing it. i really like this song. i love the shins.

great song, its about a girl who puts on all her makeup and goes out to find guys, but they're all just looking for action, she's been picking up all the guys because shes actually looking for a good one but theyre all one night stands and then she takes off all her makeup and doesnt have to worry about guys wanting to "do" her

I pretty much agree with everyone that it's about a girl who goes out and gets taken advantage of...but I'd like to add that it's also quite obvious that she's also the kind of girl who goes with a guys who aren't good to her but she sticks up for them as if they were the best thing that ever happened to her.

Fortnight
Taylor Swift
The song 'Fortnight' by Taylor Swift and Post Malone tells a story about strong feelings, complicated relationships, and secret wishes. It talks about love, betrayal, and wanting someone who doesn't feel the same. The word 'fortnight' shows short-lived happiness and guilty pleasures, leading to sadness. It shows how messy relationships can be and the results of hiding emotions. “I was supposed to be sent away / But they forgot to come and get me,” she kickstarts the song in the first verse with lines suggesting an admission to a hospital for people with mental illnesses. She goes in the verse admitting her lover is the reason why she is like this. In the chorus, she sings about their time in love and reflects on how he has now settled with someone else. “I took the miracle move-on drug, the effects were temporary / And I love you, it’s ruining my life,” on the second verse she details her struggles to forget about him and the negative effects of her failure. “Thought of callin’ ya, but you won’t pick up / ‘Nother fortnight lost in America,” Post Malone sings in the outro.

Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

Dreamwalker
Silent Planet
I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
