So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
You don't wanna talk to me,
You don't wanna say the words,
You try to get off the hook,
You try to get off the hook.
Sprawling on a pin,
Hanging off the hook,
Trying to get yourself away,
Trying to get yourself away.
There's no use dwelling on,
On what might have been,
Just think of all the fun,
You could be having.
We know the way you talk,
We know what you want,
We know what you want,
What you really wanted.
Take a look around,
There's candles on the cake,
On what might have been,
The road you should have took,
Mistakes mistaken
There's no use dwelling on,
No use dwelling on.
It's such a beautiful day,
It's such a beautiful day,
Find yourself a ?
Go and get some rest.
It's such a beautiful day.
It's such a beautiful day.
Go up to the mic,
Go up to the mic,
Go and get some rest.
You don't wanna say the words,
You try to get off the hook,
You try to get off the hook.
Sprawling on a pin,
Hanging off the hook,
Trying to get yourself away,
Trying to get yourself away.
There's no use dwelling on,
On what might have been,
Just think of all the fun,
You could be having.
We know the way you talk,
We know what you want,
We know what you want,
What you really wanted.
Take a look around,
There's candles on the cake,
On what might have been,
The road you should have took,
Mistakes mistaken
There's no use dwelling on,
No use dwelling on.
It's such a beautiful day,
It's such a beautiful day,
Find yourself a ?
Go and get some rest.
It's such a beautiful day.
It's such a beautiful day.
Go up to the mic,
Go up to the mic,
Go and get some rest.

I'd say I'd have to disagree with the idea that these are more optimistic views of Radiohead. I think Thom was being sarcastic throughout most of the song. I think he's not actually saying "it's such a beautiful day" over and over again, but he's actually mocking dumb optimistic people, by quoting their typical lines, "It's such a beautiful day! Blah Blah"...I think he's trying to convey the message that "Ignorance is Bliss", or really "bliss is ignorance." He's saying there is no point and no time to waist on sitting back and smelling the flowers. note in mind he's talking about a guy who took the bait, and is stuck on a fish-hook, trying to wiggle loose, and struggling. Does that sound real "happy" to you? not to me. he says "look at all the fun we COULD be having", not "are having". How can this song possibly be a happy song?
"there's no use dwelling on what might have been just think of all the fun you could be having." that's quite optimistic actually.
yes but as phrogex said thom is being sarcastic thru most of the song, d'you not read that part?
