"Tell Me Why" as written by John Lennon and Paul Mccartney....
Tell me why you cried, and why you lied to me
Tell me why you cried, and why you lied to me

Well, I gave you everything I had
But you left me sitting on my own
Did you have to treat me oh, so bad
All I do is hang my head and moan

Tell me why you cried, and why you lied to me
Tell me why you cried, and why you lied to me

If there's something I have said or done
Tell me what and I'll apologize
If you don't really can't go on
Holding back these tears in my eyes

Tell me why you cried, and why you lied to me
Tell me why you cried, and why you lied to me

Well, I beg you on my bended knees
If you'll only listen to my pleas
Is there anything I can do
'Cause I really can't stand it, I'm so in love with you

Tell me why you cried, and why you lied to me
Tell me why you cried, and why you lied to me

General Commenthow can such an upbeat song still feel so sad? And yet it does, as the pain, frustration and hurt are made so clear in the heart-wrenching lyrics. It is said that this is more about a child's perspective on parents divorcing than a boy/girl relationship falling apart. And if you take it the first way, the song has more meaning

General Commentit's not that sad is it? the Beatles' deliver this song like they're having the time of their lives.

but it's pretty straightforward when it comes to meaning and all that stuff. I think Lennon called the song a "throwaway" or something like that after the fact. nonetheless, the song is catchy as hell and the execution is flawless.

General CommentI really didn't like 'With The Beatles' that much... Overlooking the sappy lyrics (which were pretty standard that Era), none of the songs did anything for me even on multiple listenings. And then this album just kicks you in the guts with that opening clang on the title track... And this one, Tell Me Why, is genuinely one that makes you sit up and the closest I've got to headbanging at an early Beatles track ;D

My InterpretationMy interpretation of this song when I initially heard it was that the narrator was cheated on by his girl and he subsequently cannot understand why nor stand it. Underneath the pop melody and the ultra poppy 7th chords, there is definately a tragedy in the way some early beachboys songs depict love or betrayal. The Beatles like to balance darker themes with happier melodies like this one and darker melodies with more use of minor chords and happier lyrics... very bizarre effect but quite well used!
