"Grind" as written by Asher Paul Roth, Christopher Steven Brown, Larrance Levar Dopson and Lamar Daunte Edwards....
In the darkest hole, you'd be well advised
Not to plan my funeral before the body dies, yeah
Come the morning light, it's a see through show
What you may have heard and what you think you know, yeah

Let the sun never blind your eyes
Let me sleep so my teeth don't grind
Hear a sound from a voice inside

Sure to play a part, so you love the game
And in truth your lies become one and same, yeah
I could set you free, rather hear the sound
Of your body breaking as I take you down, yeah

Let the sun never blind your eyes
Let me sleep so my teeth don't grind
Hear a sound from a voice inside

In the darkest hole, you'd be well advised
Not to plan my funeral before the body dies, yeah

Let the sun never blind your eyes
Let me sleep so my teeth don't grind
Hear a sound from a voice inside

General CommentK I'm not trying to be the one to say 'this tracks about drugs.' Rumors were going around at that time though that Layne was missing fingers and even DEAD because of his drug abuse.

In the darkest hole, you'd be well advised
Not to plan my funeral before the body dies, yeah
Come the morning light, it's a see through show
What you may have heard and what you think you know, yeah

This song was sort of a response to that by saying.. He was just saying 'I'm still here, I'm alive and the rumors are bs.'

Buuut then the part of the song...

Let the sun never blind your eyes
Let me sleep so my teeth don't grind

Personally I can't help but to understand that as the state your body goes through when you are in withdrawal. During that time the pupils become very large and sensitive to light and you are in a state of hellish insomnia and anxiety so as a result the teeth chatter and grind.

Hear a sound from a voice inside

I understand that simply like your head telling you over and over "I need more NOW"..

This song was written by Jerry, but the songs meaning is definitely speaking for Layne about the rumors the media made up as well as the reality of the lifestyle Layne choose...

    RIP Layne.

General CommentJerry wrote this to say f*ck off to the media who is always hounding them, mainly Layne, with all the rumors about him before his death, lossing fingers, arms, legs so on so forth,Jerry wanted to say hey, don't say i'm dead,or Layne's dead till i am dead,so he said in the Music Bank booklet...RIP Layne, you finally got to go home

General CommentI rather find the deepest meaning in the first two lines
In the darkest hole, you'd be well advised
Not to plan my funeral before the body dies, yeah
I see a person down in a hole that was dug and they are trying to see there way out of it.

General CommentNeed I say anything except RIP Layne Staley, rest in peace. "In the darkest hole, you'd be well advised
Not to plan my funeral before the body dies"-seems kinda poignant now...

General CommentKRBSRACING31K not a bad theory and i see where u come from but idt thats not it.

Let the sun never blind your eyes
-means for the media not to be blinded by just tryin to get a good story and makin up rumors

Let me sleep so my teeth don't grind
    - let layne sleep without worring about rumors (like grindin ur teeth when ur angry)

Hear a sound from a voice inside
-not 100% on this sentence but i think its like since ppl hear about the rumors in the news that they think it must be true.

General CommentI think in this song he was saying don't plan the funeral before the body dies he was wanting to show that he was going to get over the drug shit and wanted to and he wanted to show that he wasn't just this junkie. I really wish he could have.

General CommentI think aicguy and HardRocker have the right gist, about the media attention.

"Come the morning light, it's a see through show
What you may have heard and what you think you know" :
"may have heard", "think you know" obviously refer to unfounded knowledge, rumors, that the "morning light" dispels

"Sure to play a part, so you love the game
And in truth your lies become one and same":
the media love their importance, so they adore this love-hate relationship they build with artists; and such, when the media generate and propagate rumors as 'fact' (ET and Extra! anyone?) "in truth [their] lies become one and same"

(thus could the lines "I could set you free, rather hear the sound Of your body breaking as I take you down" refer to a possible lawsuit?)

and finally, can't we extrapolate that "In the darkest hole, you'd be well advised Not to plan my funeral before the body dies" refers to the oblivion the media like to sink 'outdated' celebrities into? Couldn't Cantrell be calling out the hypocrites of the media for dismissing them once they've used Staley's drug abuse as rumor fodder?
