"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
Come over here
All you've got is this moment
Twenty-first century's yesterday
You can care all you want
Everybody does, yeah, that's okay
So slide over here and give me a moment
Your moves are so raw, I've got to let you know
I've got to let you know
You're one of my kind
I need you tonight
'Cause I'm not sleepin'
There's somethin' about you, girl
That makes me sweat
How do you feel? I'm lonely
What do you think? Can't think at all
What you gonna do? Gonna live my life
So slide over here and give me a moment
Your moves are so raw, I've got to let you know
I've got to let you know
You're one of my kind
I need you tonight
'Cause I'm not sleepin'
There's somethin' about you, girl
That makes me sweat
So how do you feel? I'm lonely
What do you think? Can't think at all
What you gonna do? Gonna live my life
How do you feel? I'm lonely

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve.
The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future.
Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere"
The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”
No Surprises

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
Midnight
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
“Midnight” is a song about finding a love that is so true that it provides a calming feeling through every storm. Ed Sheeran reflects on his good fortunes in landing someone with such peace and support and speaks of not fearing the dark days because he knows they’ll all end in the safety nets of her arms.
“Well, good morning there / What a way to start the day / With everything laid bare,” Ed Sheeran sings in the first verse, enthusiastic to be waking up beside his woman. He apologizes for missing her calls in the second verse and promises to return them because for him, speaking to her is the most important thing. “Well, I get lost inside my head / In this chaos, you’re my calm / And I will find my feet again / ‘Cause еven the worst days of my life will always еnd / At midnight in your arms,” sings Ed Sheeran in the chorus, revelling in his good luck.
The words are just what lust and crush feel like and the music is so utterly sexy you just cant help but lust for it.
Most sexy songs just kinda gross me out and turn me away, but this one just has this charisma to it, I can get into it, I feel it! I love it!
@Passionate Indeed here for this comment. It’s a sex song no doubt. I find the line “ You're one of my kind” meaning there are many other girls who are his kind. She’s one of them. This is what tipped me off that she’s just being used for sex. It’s nothing deep, he’s not looking for a relationship. Just him saying “need you tonight” - for just tonight.
INXS FOREVER!!!!!
I love INXS and the song is like he says her moves are "raw". It's so gritty and wonderful! I love it!
Yeah, this song just exudes sex.
"I need you tonight 'Cause I'm not sleeping There's something about you girl That makes me sweat"
I think of this part as being about cocaine. 1> You think you need it 2> You won't be sleeping 3> A slang word for cocaine is "girl" 4> You will sweat
Ya don't think it could just be what he is actually saying? "I need you tonight, cos I'm not sleeping. There's something about you girl, that makes me sweat"?-No? Ok.
emuInAmuumuu: It says "MY interpretation." No? Ok.
That makes no sense. Who ever called coke "girl?" You don't sweat doing coke. It lasts for just 20 minutes. Have you seen Michael Hutchence? IIt's not a drug song. It's a sex song.
@RockAngels You've never heard of cocaine being called girl? You've not been around, have you? LOL
Girl= coke/blow, Boy= heroin/horse
And you say that you don't sweat when doing cocaine? Ha! OK, you have ZERO credibility here. It lasts 20 minutes? That's why you keep doing more and more and more. It lasts until you run out of money.
This song is the best for partying! it's so much fun and it has a great beat It's the only INXS song that I really love.
